First post, been a lurker:)

A friend who had freshly picked shrooms went fishing and left them in his car all day. He brought them to me and they are shrunken, black, and sorta liquidy. Want to know if they are still okay to eat or what?

No visible "mold"

smells like normal shrooms

anyone have this happen to them? I can't seem to find any info on this phenomenon online...

Wha could have happened?

FYI my same friend ate and tripped like normal about 2 days ago when he got them (saw them harvested)

Probably not dried properly and oxidized, heat accelerates it. No wait I didn't read properly, they were not dried at all? If you packed them in a plastic bag or something like that they cannot dry at all and become gooey. In any case, don't eat them.
Next time, put them in a place where they can start to dry right away with constant fresh air moving over them. Or bring a box that also holds a container of dessicant and make them cracker-dry much more easily.

An alternative if you will be eating them within days after is to put them in the fridge immediately. I think in tupperware or something is okay.

at room temperature wet shrooms can last a day or so if kept where air can circulate (paper bag)

when trapped in a airtight container, shrooms will grow bacterial infection (slime) within a couple hours.

In a hot car, I would imagine wet shrooms will go from edible to disgusting in a few short minutes.
