Hey all!
So I've recently become enamored with the ornamental and beauteousness
of the papaver somniferum poppy. I've done a fair amount of reading and watched a number of instructional videos, and so I have a basic understanding of what goes into seeding,growing/maintaining, and harvesting once they're old and grey.
I obtained 3 strains of seeds over the net. Persian whites, Giganthemum, and Tasmanian Purple (still waiting on those to arrive). I've decided to seed a few experimental ones outdoors, but the majority of my plants are beginning in peat pellets. Consensus as far as I can tell is it takes between 7-21 days for the seeds to germinate and sprout into seedlings depending on temperature and light. Well I live in souther ontario, and the temperature is pretty ideal right now as it's fairly cold still.
Anyway, I'll get to the point. I seeded about 17 peat pellets with the persians and giganthemums on Sunday and by Monday they had already begun to sprout. In fact, today they were already on average about an inch tall. This came to me as a complete surprise, and a frankly exuberant one. The Giganthemums seem to be growing taller than the persians, and not all the persian seeds have sprouted. Problem is, the seedlings almost look sort of dark and not a lively green like you might expect. Could it be because there's too much moisture in the peat pellets, and they might begin to rot? Tonight I took off the plastic lid to my artificial greenhouses to see if perhaps that'd help them get sun and less moisture.
How much longer should I wait to put them in their final growing place, since most of them are already at 1 inch?
Advice from anyone with experience in successful growing and harvest of this poppy would be extremely helpful. Thanks!
