Hey everyone
I'm horz and I'm new to BL... well always a reader but never feeling the need to post... until recently.
I've been feeling rather down lately. NSA, Prism, Pointless legislation, Bias media and ignorant governments.
My whole concept of freedom in society has been totally ruined.
I have always been a civil libertarian. Each to their own! As long as it doesn't hurt the person next to you, Go for it! Just don't be a c**t to your fellow humans, pay your taxes, don't drink and drive.
Endless possibility and freedom. A person could be anything and do anything with his life free from oppression and scrutiny as long as he followed the general principal to be good to his fellow man. I studied under this concept and now work under it. Then Ed Snowden had a leak which told me that somewhere, somebody is collecting and storing our personal information as if society cant be trusted. Not the first time I have seen reversed onus of proof used lately.
I have tried talking to my peers about this issue but they seem not to care. Mass surveillance, prohibition, bias media, lack of a real political process ect was just the machine of sociaty. "You see Civilised society is all about control". It was always my understanding that we (Australia) are a democracy, and the democratic process provided for a fair and proper review of the facts followed by consultation and debate. Then an informed or consensus decisions made in the good of all. Advertised and transparent. Maybe I'm dreaming?
As for this Snowden thing, well I used to expect journalists (and their bosses) were completely bias... But CMON! Not one focused on the mass privacy breach to our basic human rights (UNDHR) but rather reported on how Snowden was a criminal. It made me sick. What hope do we have to change things?
I do not believe 'they' (the few who control the many) will ever give up this pointless war on drugs. People will still die horribly because they do not have access to the help and support they need. The black market will fuel criminal activity, which in turn creates fear which justifies giving up freedom. Harm minimisation is always second fiddle. How long before the "Revered onus of proof" is applied to something else.
So would I rather be safe of free. Well both actually.
So anyway, that's my rant, anyone got any encouraging words to revive my hope in drug reform?
Nice to meet you all
