Heist nets $75 million in prescription drugs

t.

I can just imagine more people scheming over stealing thousands of oxy's over these type of drugs.

Sure...if it were average people or drug users. But professional criminals with a businessman's brain? Just speculation, but I'm guessing that one of the NY Mob Families was either involved in, or provided a fence or two for the gains of the heist.

Money from selling HGH, Cancer and AIDS medication trumps money from selling opiates. In reality there is probably a bigger market for this shit than there is for narcotics, especially with the right out-of-country connections that someone like the Mob would have.

I would bet money that this shit had to do with Organized Crime

And recreational value? fuck a nod... sending your kids to college and driving a range rover is way more recreational than railing some Oxys... :p

little things:

Water Bottle Leads to Suspect in Biggest Drug Heist in History

Investigators have arrested two brothers from Cuba in a mysterious $80 million drug caper that included an elaborate scheme complete with repelling rope and disabling the alarm system.

Amaury Villa, 37, and Amed Villa, 46, citizens of Cuba who have both been living in Miami, have been charged in connection with the largest pharmaceutical heist in U.S. history, as well as the biggest theft in Enfield and state history.

A water bottle one of the brothers left behind at the scene apparently helped lead officials to the brothers, U.S. Attorney David Fein said during a news conference on Thursday afternoon.

The brothers were arrested in Florida on Thursday, accused of participating in the thefts of Gemzar, a chemotherapy drug used to treat lung cancer; Zyprexa, a depressant and antipsychotic used to treat bipolar disorder; Prozac, Lilly's first billion-dollar drug and the company's top seller before it lost patent protection several years ago; and Cymbalta which is used to treat anxiety disorders.

"As far as we know, this brazen crime is the biggest theft in Connecticut history, and in the history of the pharmaceutical industry, countrywide," Fein said.

The arrests come amid a broader ongoing multistate investigation into cargo thefts.

Amaury is among 11 people charged in Florida with possession and sale of drugs stolen from tractor-trailer cargo at truck stops in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Tennessee, as well as drugs stolen from a GlaxoSmothKline warehouse in Virginia, Fein said.

"Stolen drugs pose a clear threat to public health," Fein said.

damn a water bottle? How do you go through all that planning and thats what gets you caught?

Unless they got set up

Love reading about big heists like this and thinking of all the planning that must have gone into it.
It will be a bloody shame if they get convicted because of a water bottle.

Or they might try to pass off what they stole as something recreational. In that case - I do hope they get caught.

Edit - I take that back.

wow, pros for sure, repelled down into the warehouse and left out the loading docks in tractor trailers. even though they didnt steal any controlled substances, all that shit is worth something to someone. I like the one about the truck full of oxy getting stolen while the driver went in for a pack of smokes. now that is a haul.

edit, just read about the water bottle. i take back the thing about them being pros. thats like falling asleep in the getaway car.

People from Cuba can come to the US, but we're not allowed there (without some special license)? Or was he here illegally?

Cubans are legal immigrants the second they set foot on US soil or sand (literally).

That seems very football-esque.

Or at least your statement makes me imagine Cubans scrambling out of the water on a screened run making the final drive to the endzone. Make that final dive into the sand and you're good.

That sounds a lot more exciting than regular football actually. The team going for the endzone would REALLY want that touchdown if not getting it would mean they'd be deported.

even sicker would be Border Patrol Agents along the beach ready to attack American Gladiators style and prevent them from getting off the beach

Word. I didn't include them in the imaginary? situation, but they are an integral part in this football type game. Well a game to us, real life to them.

Baywatch would probably still on TV if they started including this as a storyline.
