Hearing gets muffled on opioids, but in a weird way.

Whenever I am on a good dose of oxy my hearing gets messed up. I think it used to happen more with hydrocodone but opioids in general it happens. But what I want to find out is this: Whenever I am on an opioid, usually oxy, and push my eyes upward like into the back of my with a good amount of force, my hearing gets extremely muffled. I know hearing problems can be rather common while on opiates/opioids, but has anyone ever experienced this? It seems like the higher of a dose I take, the more muffled my hearing gets, which seems pretty logical. When I am not on any painkillers, and roll my eyes up, my ears do not get muffled. If anyone knows the reason for this it would be great to hear some ideas. If you guys even try it that would be cool to see what other people say. Mods feel free to move. Thanks and I look forward to the replies!

opiates produce a different euphoria. it creates more of a relaxing euphoria so it blocks off signals from being sent through your spinal cord so that's why it makes your eyes roll and cut your hearing. you say your eyes roll after you take the opiates, but how long between the last time and how long have you been using them?

My hearing goes out of wack when I do Morphine. Im sitting there watching a movie & I see the peoples lips moving but cant equate it with voices. Like those old japanese Godzilla movies where they are moving there lips but there is a delay.

Um my eyes do not involuntarily roll, I have just done it when I have a migraine because it gives temporary relief. I have been using heavily going on a year now and I have been using everyday which sucks. Me and my friend went cold turkey which was just dumb, went 6 days clean, and then had a psychological freak out and relapsed. Going to try and get off once again when I can get the 8mg sublingual subutex's in a couple weeks.I can tell when me and my friends are really high because we are chillin right next to each other and we are pretty much screaming at each other but it sounds normal to us lol. You guys can relate to that im sure right? I figure that since hearing damage is irreversible, my guess is that hearing problems that are caused by opioids/opiates, would be irreversible as well, correct?

Nope. Does your hearing return to normal in between? If so, tis not permanent!

There are many causes of hearing impairment, broadly speaking either relating to the conduction of sound into your ear through the middle ear and to the inner ear (conductive) or a problem with the cochlea, auditory nerve or the part of your brain which deals with hearing (sensorineural). I can't think of any reason why opiates could do damage to any of those areas. I imagine it is more a problem of perception of sounds - in the same way that when you are drowsy or dreamy your perception is generally dampened..

I've actually never noticed it myself I have to say! But I would be extremely surprised if you are doing permanent damage.

Listening to headphones loud or going to gigs/loud clubs without using ear protection can and does permanently damage your hearing, however. Had to get that quick general HR thing in as I have permanent tinnitus from standing near the speaker too many times at too many epic nights...

the codones (oxy/hydro) in particular posses the potential to make you deaf. i would post my source but i'm too lazy lol

Really? Interesting, I did not know that! Shall hunt for the source myself ;)

hmm i duno that is wierd my gf gets the opposite effect when she is on oxy her hearing gets extra sensitive and the more she does the more sensitive they get.. sorry i couldn;t help more but i'm assuming everyone reacts differently and that could be just the way you react to opiates
