Health Canada plans to treat marijuana like other medicines
CBC
December 16th, 2012

A proposal released by Health Canada would treat medical marijuana more like medicine and effectively commercialize its production and distribution.

"Current medical marijuana regulations have left the system open to abuse," Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq stated in a press release on Sunday.

She said the proposed Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) would help control illegal activity, while also allowing easier access for those patients who have genuine medical needs.

"These changes strike the right balance between patient access and public safety," she said

Essentially, the new system will create licensed grow-ops that people could shop at, provided they have a prescription from their doctor. The regulations would allow for a regulated commercial market of licensed producers.

I wonder where they got that $8.80 per gram figure.

put your money where your mouth is health can.
250 an oz... thats inflated but not unreasonably so. at least for the west coast.

this seems like a pretty feeble cash grab now that people are realising that, guess what, people like cannabis.
and people will still grow thir own. you can count on it.

8.80 or whatever a gram isn't bad, cheaper than street prices here. However they should also offer discounts for bulk purchases as a 1/4 lb goes for about 700 here and it's very high quality, so if they want to stamp out the black market for it, all they have to do is keep prices lower. Their garbage medical cannabis (well it's not bad actually) from before was 5 a gram (sorry about prices) and came with thc/cbd ratio on the package which i thought was cool. Either way, health canada had to put something in place or face complete legalization from what i know. So it seems they've gone for a californian style of medical cannabis. Now they didn't solve the Dr. gateway keeper issue but maybe docs will become more liberal.

my current Dr wouldn't write my dad a prescription despite him being a long medicinal card holder, that kind of shit is what's wrong with the system and still could be, though i bet Drs who prescribe cannabis will start springing up rapidly. Sounds like a good thing to me but not sure how it will work out. Gotta be better than the old system though.

AFAIK you can grow yourself 5 plants without legal repercussions lol. Try a 6th plant and you are fucked.

I'm not sure if this is actually news? Use of medical marijuana has been approved by Health Canada for years - why is this coming out now?
I know that a grow-op in Montreal (Club Compassion) has been harassed for years by the cops for operating a shop. Their shop was shut down countless times by the police in recent years.
So why is this being published by the CBC as if it were actual news?
I don't mean to be paranoid but this Harper asshole is making me doubtful of everything coming out of this country.

My doctor said, 'my college of physicians dose not support this at this time' and wouldn't discuss it. the liability is untested and therefore a too much of a risk.

the proposed changes look like a gift to the pharm industry.

this is most certainly news. Health Canada had to come back with a system that actually worked. And this one may, except the doctor gatekeeper issue which HC did not solve. It's actually huge news for us here.

Until harper is out we won't see anything other than this happening (this whole thing was from a court case a while ago, you can read about it on cannabis culture website). It's a big step for us with a conservative government. If we get a more liberal government you can bet we will have recreational cannabis in no time.

In essence this was brought on by the people and specific medical patients dedicating their time and effort to the cause. It's a triumph in that sense, and Harper can't do shit about it.

HC basically had a monopoly on the market, growing cannabis in this abandoned mine way underground (chance of radiation anyone???) so things are looking much brighter now, though only if Drs are on board with it. There were also no fancy varieties or certain strains to help certain people; just one kind for everyone.

man cpt heroin you always make me so damn jealous. You live in LA and have easy access to the best cannabis in the world most likely. I live in the darkest, rainiest most depressing place (well not the most but close to it). I am moving to california one day, i fucking hate Canada's weather. We do have great cannabis here though, and OTC codeine :p lol and our prices are much cheaper for high quality (you can't buy shit quality here). I usually get to chose my strains but i have a good connection.

=D

I recently went to this amazing hash bar where I got a really generous sample of wax for free just for coming in for the first time. %)

So yea, when you get here, you'll love it. :D

^you're killing me here haha i've never even had wax, no one who makes it is willing to part with it and i'm not a grower so no access to make my own.

yep and would indeed use one if i had wax. The best i've gotten here is BHO and it blew my mind lol. Would wax work in a volcano? i have one of those steel wool type things to vaporize oil on it.

I've had wax in Ontario. There used to be a 'church' in Toronto that sold pot as its sacrament. I still rarely find pot that incredible (in every way, density of buds and smoke, colour, smell, flavour, high, curb appeal) I am sure there are others like this still operating in different parts of Canada. I turned 18 and another member (my sister) signed me up, no medical issues, but, I did have to sign that I use cannabis as a religious sacrament, which was kind of upsetting to me.

Of course every user loves the LA dispensaries but I feel that system is not safe, and I feel the proposed system by health canada could be just as dangerous. I know that in Canada some of our dispensaries have body guards with guns inside the front door and you need to go through 2 layers of bullet proof glass to go buy your pot. Raids happen often, by police and by thugs who steal money/pot. Of course, police raids would happen less frequently since there probably wouldn't be a line out the door like at many LA clubs.
