Healing chronic chapped lips

Vaseline is AMAZING ... it looks gross though so only wear it at night! Or at home! lol I would never wear it out.

Get better chapstick too! I have this nice fruit flavoured stuff but it really doesn't do much. When I get dry lips, I need some good chapstick. Burts Bees (or whatever that is) is supposed to be really good, that's what my mom used.

But Vaseline at night is important! Seriously!!

Chap stick SUCKS compared to Blistex! Try it and you'll never use anything else!

Cocoa butter, the one that looks like white chocolate. Btw, DON'T eat it, you'll get diarrhea.

AfterGlow, +1 on the Blistex!!

Ever since I was on Roaccutane (accutane) as a teenager, I have had serious issues with chapped lips. I have tried ALL the medicated lip balms. You name it, I've tried it.

The only one that helps long-term is Blistex lip conditioner, i.e. not even just any product from Blistex range. It has to be the lip conditioner in the white pot. At any given time I have about 3 of these floating around my handbag/office/home.

Everything else just makes my lips worse, including vasoline, carmex, paw paw ointment, chap stick, everything. Blistex is the way to go :)

Do you guys have Blistex in the US?? If not, addictivepersona, I will seriously send you some in the mail!!! I know this thread is a few months old so I'm a little late to the game but seriously, Blistex will change your life! :)

^ Hah, we do have Blistex but I've never seen that particular product (though then again I've never looked), so if I cannot find it the next time my lips get chapped I will certainly take you up on the offer of mailing it. :)

hehe

try using Ghee(clarified butter), a tiny bit as chap-stick(weird word) on your lips overnight.
or maybe, dip a bag of Black-Tea into hot water, then press against your lips for ~3 minutes...

here ya go!
* Apply ghee with or without honey on chapped lips. Apply this 2-3 times a day or at bedtime.
* Either mustard oil or coconut oil or sesame oil to be applied or dropped into the navel to attain faster results.
* Cucumber slices or lemon juice can be applied frequently to cure this condition.
* Grind rose petals with milk cream or butter or ghee and apply on the lips to cure severe and chronic chapped lips.
* Glycerine with lemon juice and rose water helps when applied regularly.
* Apply honey and give a mild massage, then wash off using warm water. Following this, apply milk cream or ghee and leave it on for a few hours to have healthy pink lips.
* Gargle either with cooking oil or medicated oil regularly after brushing your teeth. This not only helps in the prevention of oral cavity but also improves the health of your lips.
* Milk cream with or without little turmeric should be applied 2-3 times a day when one has painful chapped lips.
* Bee wax with a little cooking oil or ghee and honey can be used as lip balm to prevent cracked lips.
* Aloe vera gel or fresh aloe leaf pulp with turmeric and honey can be applied on painful, red chapped lips. Apply this 3-4 times a day for a few days to get rid of pain and redness.
* Melt good quality bee wax or paraffin and add turmeric, coconut oil and neem leaf juice. When it comes to a cream-like consistency it is ready for application. This cream can be applied every night and washed off in the morning or applied 3-4 times a day and washed off after 15-20 minutes.

Thanks, pip, but unfortunately I don't use animal products! Hopefully some of those will be able to help someone else though. :)

I've been too lazy to look through the thread, but if you can get your hands on vitamin E oil that does the trick quite nicely. Not the 'gel' stuff, that's horribly diluted, but the oil itself. Even breaking apart a gelcap would probably work. Makes for incredibly soft lips, and can actually help with under-eye issues as well.

... or so I've heard. <cough>

So this is pretty related.... My actual lips aren't chapped, but the skin surrounding them is? So its like a centimeter all around my lips is super raw, dry, itchy, and somewhat red. I don't know how this happens. I have been using the same chapstick I always do.

OP...I feel your pain. I have the same thing and when it's bad it sucks!

What I have found best for me is the following:

I have a mini tub of carmex (http://www.thedailybalance.com/wp-content/uploads/carmex.gif) that I use each night before I go to bed. I put a lot of it on my lips right before I pass out. When I wake up, I usually wipe my lips off on my sleeve and you can see the dead skin that remains on the sleeve. (this is much similar to the posters who said to apply vaseline before you go to bed).

Doing just that for one or two nights usually gets my lips correct for a week or two and when they start to get chapped again I just do it all over.

*Also I've noticed that the room I sleep in, the weather outside, and the position in which I sleep affect how chapped my lips are in the am.

~If the room is dusty, dry or has multiple fans or one big fan in it (that are ON, of course) my lips get more chapped than usual.
~If the weather is cold or exceptionally dry outside, same thing.
~Also if I sleep on my back with my mouth open, they get really bad. If I sleep on my stomach with my mouth in the pillow or to the side, my lips don't get nearly as chapped.

sorry for the long post, just my 2 cents. Hope it helps!

This might sound gross but it could be a fungal infection?? Don't let that make you feel dirty or unhygenic, we are literally covered with fungal spores and bacteria etc etc, but it just takes a minor imbalance to allow a fungal colony to develop. Go see your doctor, it could be as easy as taking some oral fungicide or applying some cream.
Then again I could be totally wrong! But if it's as uncomfortable as it sounds, may as well see your doctor about it anyway just in case it's something else.
Good luck!

No, that actually totally makes sense. My boyfriend had some kind of weird irritation on different spots on his forehead and cheeks, which we both passed off as eczema. He kept saying it was really itchy and raw, and it looked really red. Obviously I didn't think anything of our faces touching when we kiss, etc. But he ended up going to the dermatologist and the derma thought it was either a really persistent case of eczema or it could possibly be a fungal infection. He got some medicine for it, but now we are living in different cities and all of a sudden I HAVE IT. lol. I wasn't sure if it was coincidental or if it was actually the same thing he had. Since I've literally never had these symptoms in my life though I may go get it checked out if it doesn't go away. It's not really gross I don't think its just superrrrrrrrr itchy!!

'Tis the season for chapped lips (for all of us in the Northern Hemisphere). Time to grab my chapstick and boogie on down!

Most of the reason we get chapped lips is dryness in the air or in our bodies, persistently cold weather, or sickness.

Just make sure not to lick your lips. Balm them and do what you have to do.

ugh so apparently making an appointment with my new doctor is akin to asking them to give me their firstborn child or something.... dont get me started but anyway.

i cant go see the doctor about my insanely chapped, dry, cracking skin around my lips and mouth for awhile. i did a bit of internet research though since i have to wait anyway and im hurting. what i discovered is that its prob not a fungal infection (cant be sure though) because it doesnt have a red border and its more like a dry, itchy dermatitis like thing going on. So I've put vaseline, chapstick, moisturizer, and what have you on it and nothing. Today I ordered some tea tree oil and some coconut oil from amazon to give that a shot. I read on a few blogs people have tried this and it worked. Can't hurt right? If it doesnt work I'll just use the supplies for other things. I'll letcha all know what happens ;) haha it could be helpful idk. i'm excited to try the coconut oil though because I do love the smell and taste of coconut.

That is really annoying to hear about the difficulties making an appointment hun. Ridiculous!!
Good luck with the tea tree and coconut oils. Let us know how it goes! :)
