Have you ever gained weight from a med?

Quick question for OP: If u were at about 165 which us said was a healthy looking weight why would u want/try to lose weight? Confused.:\

A) have taken medications and not gained weight = dexamphetamine, defo didnt gain wieght!

B) have taken medications and gained weight = Zyprexa/olanzapine, Serequel, Largactyl all made me stack on the kg's!!!! got up to 90kg...damn son!

C) have taken medications and gained a substantial amount of weight = Zyprexa the worst one for that.

D) have no taken medications period

Everything tasted like cardboard for 2 weeks, and I was eating rehab food so it might have really been cardboard.

THAT above, is entirely possible.

I usually lose weight when I check into rehab cause the food is so shitty.

The only time I didn't was when I went to a 30 day residential, but that was because I was so heavy into H that I had lost like 30 lbs in 2 months from H and another 10-15 in 2 months from doing E. I was never eating, so actually putting food in me for 30 days (combined with little physical activity) I gained 12 lbs in one month :(

I put on 30kg since I first started antipsychotic meds. Always really hungry especially at night.
Plus my eating schedule is all over the place.
70 kg to 100+

Mirtazapine (avanza / remeron) has caused me to gain heaps of weight. Constant hunger, hell I even get up in the middle of the night and eat something now, not even really realising what I'm doing until the next morning. I'd never done that before being on mirtazapine... ever. When I started on it I cut my calorie intake, increased the exercise I was doing each week, and still gained abdominal fat... O_o*

Yeh mirtazapine has caused my old eating disorder nastyness to return in full strength, guns a' blazing. I told my doctor on Wednesday and said I wanted to stop taking it for that reason but he strongly suggested I keep taking it because I'm... well... not in a position of sufficient mental stability to be withdrawing from meds at the moment...

Both Effexor and Lexapro killed my appetite.

My old psych did that with Seroquel, except he neglected to mention that increased appetite/weight gain was a side effect. I was on Seroquel for a year before someone mentioned it usually makes you gain weight. I stopped taking it and went in yelling to my next appointment... he said he didn't think it would be an issue since I "don't eat anyway" Asshole :X I stopped switched to a new psych immediately,

Seroquel definitely does increase appetite, I get hungry right before I go to sleep every night after I take it.

Besides that, Concerta and Adderall made me lose weight. Effexor also made me gain weight. Birth control (for the three months I was on it, not sure what kind was free from PP) made me gain weight. But I’m considering going on it again…

I specifically mentioned to my psych that I wouldn't be willing to try anything that increased my appetite. So now I'm trialling moclobemide, a reversible MAOI. I'm weaning off my current NRI and starting it next week. No weight nor appetite changes are expected.

Awww hun, it doesn't sound like you're happy with the doc's decision. You need to be honest with them okay? In the meantime, if you want to vent/rant to someone, feel free to PM me okay?

I gained 40 pounds from low dose of Mirtazapin. I had it for sleeping aid. I had big beer belly before, but now that I have stopped alcohol and drugs, I should start losing weight, but it isn't that easy. I have got 9 pounds of fat stripped away but there is still a lot to do. I also take 25 - 50 mgs Seroquel at night which slows my metabolism down a bit. I would want to get a lean body for the summer. I need to get rid of the meds first.

A rule of thumb I've learned is to avoid drugs with a heavily anti-histamine profile. Almost any drug with a lot of h2 blockade has weight gain associated with it. If you are looking at a class of drugs to avoid the ones with weight gain avoid those anti-histaminic ones like seroquel among anti-psychotics and mirtazapine among anti-depressants. There are some odd-ball psych drugs that are also very causative of weight gain without h2 blockade like lithium.

I have gained lots of weight from psych drugs and also gotten high blood sugar from them. Its good to have periodic lab work when on most of them. Some Doctors are a lot more slack about this then others.

I guess I fall under "C" because I gained a good 30 plus lbs when I started taking birth control but it was also the exact same time I stopped using drugs and started eating for the first time in forever. I went from 103 to 140 in two months' time and was NOT happy about it. Thankfully my hormones evened out and I started working out, so I dropped it all quickly. I'm at a healthy weight of 128 now, thank god.

I think most women gain a little weight when they start birth control though so I was expecting it. You mentioned Seroquel too and now that I think about it, I began taking this medicine at the same time as well to cope with sleeping problems. I wasn't aware that it could contribute to weight gain but I wouldn't have known if it had done so with me as there were so many other things causing me to pack the lbs on.

I've never gained any weight FROM a medication, no. I don't think that the medications I've taken (which are plentiful) have ever had any effect on weight gain/loss. My intake is pretty consistent - it's more my life choices that did any damage/created any benefit.

lost weight when i was on depression meds, i was literally unable to eat for like a week!
gained weight on prednisone (steroid) used to mask the pain of rheumatoid arthritis, as bad as it is to have gained so much, i think i'd shoot myself if i didn't have something for the pain.

Olanzapine (Zyprexa) and lithium are the only two medications which caused me to gain weight. About 5-10 kg's.
