Have I been hacked?

People keep telling me they are receiving spam emails from my email addy. When I log into my emails there's no record of anything dodgy in the sent items or does it not work like that?

It worries me as I use the same password for a lot of things and even had some banking details, flight details (with passport number) etc stored in the email box. I use cyber rights which I thought was supposed to be really secure. :\

What can I do?

Should I be scanning my PC for viruses? This shitty old PC doesn't even ave a virus scan on it, anyone recommend a free one that's pretty good?

Cheers! :\

Change all your passwords, but make sure to physically record them somewhere that only YOU can access the. I have had the same thing happen (to me). Better to be safe than sorry. If nothing super important has been tampered w/ yet, doesn't mean it can't or won't happen in time. There seems to be more instances of this happening lately. Also run your PC anti spam and virus software regularly.

I used to use free ones for years, AVG, and someothers, but my PC ended up being totally ragged with viruses trojans etc still

I pay for kaspersky now, and not had a single problem for 4 years, doesn't matter what grot sites I go on.

Are the spam emails apparently from your address copies of emails you've first received? I got one inviting me to sign in to view 'the photos' of an acquaintance. I did and found no photos, only bullshit sales offers. The acquaintance denied all knowledge and soon after similar messages were received, seemingly from me, by people on my recent mailing list.

Apart from minor irritation, no further harm seems to have been done. Should I scrutinise bank statements and look for 99p transfers I might have missed? If you did it to enough people - on the logic it takes more than 99p's worth of their time to check - I can see how it could mount into a profitable earner.

I'm not sure if you have/use Windows or Mac software - but the above link is for Microsoft. If you use Mac, then go into CNET, 'downloads' then in the options, select 'Mac'. I have clicked on Security Software. Read through the options listed, and find the one that sounds best to you. AVG is liked by many (disliked by some), Clamwin (I have this - but it doesn't seem TOO helpful). Also, AVAST free software, among others. Let me know which ones stand out. ;)

(I'll give you better specific advice when i get out of the shower ;)... electronics in here is not wise. NOTE: I too use shit that is prone to hacking, viruses, etc. - utorrent, other downloading sites, media sharing sites, etc. However, my free software has never led me astray. I also have had no serious issues with my PC while utilizing the free software. In my opinion, it isn't necessary to buy any program for malware/spam/viruses. There are too many free software options available)

Ignore that bit of advice in bold. Daft thing to say. Be sure to make the passwords something that you can remember. Don't write them down lol.

Re virus software. I thought AVG was shit. I think it was Avast I last used on Windows & it seemed decent enough, never had any problems as far as I know. Nowadays I just rock right on to the internet with no anti-virus because my Mac is a fucking boss.

spade get your self a copy of malwarebytes........................if you have any keyloggers/malware/spyware this should find it.

are you on hotmail?

hmn, it's probably a link in an email you received and clicked on. my friend had the same problem recently in hotmail, and it automailed her contacts list [incl me, which is how I picked up on it and told her about it] with an email for windows live mail

this one had a link to a your supposed login to windows Live messenger, hoping to snag your login details if you were stupid to use it to login with. new variants of this turn up each week

delete all your recent emails and ads and whatnot

I took her laptop for a night and ran it through all the usual disinfection tools - spybot, malwarebytes etc, but her lappy wasn't infected

delete any email you don't need from your inbox, and keep only essential stuff .. delete your spam and trash folder contents, and then update and run your normal anti spyware and virus program.

Alright mate, you have not been hacked but your PC is infected with maleware.

Here are some links to some programs to sort the problem:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

http://free.avg.com/gb-en/free-antivirus-download

restart your PC in safe mode (this only loads essential bits to get your PC going, i.e. not the malware sending spam. then when you runt he programs it should erase them.

There is a link for free software -'Freeware'. And c'mooon, daft thing to say? To record your passwords somewhere? I don't know about anyone else, but to have about 20 passwords 'stored in your mind' doesn't seem to work out great for many people. Also, to keep all passwords the same isn't wise. There IS software available that stores your passwords for you - can look into those if you don't want to write down your passwords - if you do this in a way that is smart, it's not a bad move. However, if you write them on the front of a notebook lying on your desk - it's really really dumb. Use your noggin'.

Just trying to throw out suggestions. Because my goal isn't to scrutinize, that's all ;)

My hotmail kept getting banned a few weeks ago, then i started getting all these "failed email attempts" to everyone in my contacts list, changed my password and it kept happening again, ive just left it banned so fuck knows I need a new anti virus or malware checker.

AM I infected with a poison?

I can only echo what others have said. AVG is alright, but I can't use it on this machine, as it slows it right down. It's fine on my much better laptop. I have Avast on here and it's excellent. Malwarebytes is probably the best (free) program you can get for finding nasty creatures lurking in your machine. Change your e-mail account password. Don't worry too much - this has happened to loads of mates, it's pretty common. I just notify anyone it happens to and they seem to stop, after following the above steps.

KeySrambler for kernel level key encryption

nod32 for anti virus.

sandboxie for running dodgy programs you dont quite trust.

Recommend a free anti spam and anti virus program?

For most computers, the following are sufficient for keeping you safe:
*AVG Free
*Spybot Search and Destroy
*Malwarebytes

These are all good on most computers and don't eat all your resources. It sounds like you may have possibly clicked a rogue link and this is the result. Change all your passwords AFTER running the above three programs and seeing the results.

It doesn't sound like someone has access to your actual password, more so your account is somehow being accessed and using as a zombie for spam which is very common as of recent years. Delete all your Internet temporary files/cookies/cache - normally this doesn't do much but it's always good to try.
