Have been taking St Johns Wort & 5HTP, can I take Tramadol tonight?!

Evening ladies and gents.

My first post so hello to all! :)

My question is SWIM took his last dose of 5-HTP and St Johns Wort this morning, can SWIM take a reccy dose of Tramadol (400mg) tonight?

SWIM has been taking 100mg 5HTP for about 2 weeks and 600mg St Johns Wort (which is two caps of each and the brand is Holland & Barrett.)

SWIM only had one cap of each this morning (about 11am,) would it be safe to take the Tramadol tonight? SWIM is a healthy individual and uses Tramadol very rarely to chill out on a night in.

I'm of course concerned of the illusive 'Serotonin Syndrome', it's lucky I randomly Google'd the combination else I wouldn't have even known about it at all!

Thoughts/experiences/advice most appreciated! :)

Thanks again! :)

Hey, welcome to Bluelight =D first off, we don't use SWIM here, it makes posts annoying to use and doesn't help you in incriminating yourself.

While I don't think it's likely you'll have a serious interaction, i'd personally wait until at least 24 hours have passed to be safe. Even minor symptoms could make the recreational experience rather unpleasant, even if it's only stuff like agitation and paranoia.

Hi mate! Haha you know I wrote it normally first then thought oh no, maybe I should change it! I only figured out what SWIM meant the other day! =D I'm not worried about incriminating myself, I just wanted to fit in! :P

Ah okay mate, thanks... I'm just shocked that something so easy to buy over the counter could have such awful side effects... I was even reading that it's bad to mix with alcohol... no mention of this on the bottles?!

I'm bloody annoyed that I took it this morning now, I blew a hot bird off to take this stuff tonight! =D 8) Haha!!

Oh snap 8( too late to call her again? And why not do drugs with her? =D

Mixing with alcohol isn't too bad, it's mostly just when you get serotonergic drugs together when problems start.

She's in a mood and 'going out with her friends' pahaha!

Umm, she's not the type and my winky doesn't do a thing whilst on Trams! Hell even taking a leak is hard enough! =D

Ah thanks mate, think I'll be okay with a bottle of wine then? I've a pretty damn high alcohol tolerance (hardcore you see, ha!) plus the fact I got absolutely hammered on Thurs as I was unaware of any potential side effects and was absolutely fine??

It seems that for some people, it worsens the side effects of alcohol (more nausea, dizziness, memory loss etc.) when combining it with 5-HTP, though it seems to vary and some people are completely fine. If you're apprehensive, just don't get drunk too fast and keep an eye out.

I was even reading that it's bad to mix with alcohol... no mention of this on the bottles?!

They rarely have strong side effects on their own and are very gentle in comparison to even many OTC drugs, but shouldn't be mixed with strong MAOIs and SSRIs. As for alcohol, the idea that you can't drink when taking 5-HTP is actually disputed. The warnings online came from just a couple cases where someone took a large amount of 5-HTP at the exact same time as a large amount of alcohol. There has not been significant proof to warrant a warning on the label. But I'd say it's best to not take them close together.

ETA: The Tramdol itself shouldn't be very likely to be a problem with 5-HTP but it's probably best to stay away from it because of the St John's Wort. I'd give 24 hours in between and take less Tramadol than usual.

Thanks chaps, you've been very helpful indeed! :)

I've not had any for 27 hours and if I was to take it tonight it would be more like 33 hours. This this should be okay??

Do either of you partake in the odd Tramadol 'experience'?! Ha
