Harry Potter/6th Book/Half-Blood Prince *SPOILERS*

Maybe I can hibernate till the next book comes out. :D

Who else hated Umbridge with a passion? Rowling definitely did a good job with her character because I love to hate her. I loved when Fred and George (whom I love) totally fucked with her.

^ i love fred & george too

i can't wait to see how they react to some of their creations used for dark acts.... i see alot of hell breakin' loose on that...

yeah, i hated Umbridge...

but i actually hated Harry more that book....

Have you listened to it?

Btw, something I forgot to say:

There is a typo at the beginning of chapter three ('fug' instead of 'fog'), and there is a HUGE GAPING PLOTHOLE that has been bugging the hell out of me.

Namely, supposedly the potions book is 50 years old, upon which Harry concludes that neither his father or his friends could have been the HBP, but then it turns out the HBP is Snape, who was in school at the same time as Harry's dad and friends! Wtf?

The book belonged to Snapes mother before snape.

I know I'm really going to get some crap for this one, but I honestly was bored for about 95% of this book.

Ron/Hermoine - no surprise, and I think it's pretty cool.

Harry/Ginny - seems a bit lame to me, but she did have a crush on him in Chamber of Secrets, so I guess I should have saw it coming.

Dumbledore dying at the hands of Snape - not shocked, really - Dumble already said that when he makes mistakes, they are HUGE. Prime example lies here.

I thought the half blood prince was a bit melodramatic, and it turned out to be kind of a letdown as to the true identity (Snape). However, I was happy to see Malfoy show some fear and humanity in this book, instead of the usual static bully brat character he'd been in the past (although I stil enjoyed him prior to this book).

I hated the fact that the big battle at Hogwart's was mainly told second hand - as in, we heard it from Ron & co's dialogue, as opposed to having it described as it occured. It was SO annoying.

The biggest praise I have for the book is how much we actually learned about Lord Voldemort, and I loved the journey through the lake for the locket. Amazing! 8o

Overall, I look at the book as a solid foundation for the final book. Personally, while I was extremely frustrated with all the injustices in Order of the Pheonix, I still enjoyed it more then this one.

Oh, and "slut" was used to describe Tom Riddle's mums. He dad was yelling at her about wanting to do a Muggle. ;)

Yeah I thought this book was the weakest in the series, and I did find it not really boring, but far from exciting for large parts.

I thought that Snape = HBP was totally anticlimactic, as you said.

Good comments about Malfoy, I hadn't thought about it particularily but you are right, this book did finally give him some more depth.

AHHH that makes sense about 'slut'. Thank you. :)

I liked it. but, I love the series, I don't think I could ever dislike it. I've read the books so many times, that I think I have too much emotional involvement in the characters, particularly Dumbledore. I admired the way the character was written, especially because I really felt his devotion to Harry. I didn't feel that way about S. Black. I was indifferent to his passing.

However I feel the book was predictable. At least, to me. I think there was a lot of foreshadowing that made the death of Dumbledore too obvious, but near the middle of the book I stopped and thought who would be killed off out of all the characters - who means most to Harry and what would hurt the most? Dumbledore is the clear answer - as he has been Harry's guide/protector throughout the series. He was giving Harry all the information he'd need by going through memories in the Pensieve so Harry could go it alone in the final book. I kept hoping though, that Dumbledore wouldn't die, since he was such a powerful wizard, and I found him to be entertaining and often a source of humor in the book.

The betrayal: I always though Snape was a bastard of course, and it sucks that Dumbledore put so much trust in him KNOWING he was such an accomplished Occlumens. I was hoping for some reason as to why Dumbledore trusted him so much, but nope. I guess that info died with good ol Albus.

I think Ron and Hermione suck as a couple. I often think Ron sucks as a character, but I'm not really that fond of insensitive teenage boys so perhaps that is why. ;) I think Harry and Hermione would be better suited.

As for Malfoy, eh, they gave him some more depth but he's still just as much of a fuck as Snape. I hope they both get what they deserve.

I liked the Tonks/Lupin angle. I think Lupin needs some lovin.

I know some of the reviews have criticized the book for not being very action packed in the start and while I agree - all the books have been like that, for the most part. The last book had more drama going on because Umbridge was there and causing so much controversy. I wanted to throw that book and I got up so many times in frustration because it was just so much of an injustice the way the Ministry was acting, and also because Harry was acting like such a prat. ;) CAPS LOCK OVERLOAD, for sure.

I was really pleased to see Harry and Dumbledore together so much. He deserved some positivity after all he went through in the previous books, things were finally going his way, as opposed to Order of the Phoenix where it was all downhill. I enjoyed the backstory and depth and I definitely agree it set a solid foundation for the last book.

Final criticism: I did not like how it would just comment on who died or who disappeared. I wanted some more story on that.

I predict Harry will die in the fight to kill Voldemort. JK Rowling doesn't seem to mind killing off prominent characters!!

just a question : in Dumbledores office there is all the previous head masters photos and they all all talk and live inside the photo pretty much does that mean harry can still talk to him and shit thro the photo??? which if he cans yes they have killed him and he cant fight or anything like that but he can still talk and help harry, which means his character will still be in the last book????

How do you know that? Is that stated directly or is that a inference?

It is stated in the book:
"No - no - Harry, I didn't mean that!' she said hastily, looking around to check that they were not being overheard. 'It's just that I was right about Eileen Prince once owning the book. You see ... she was Snape's mother!"

(p593:6)

Thanks!

The husband is currently very annoyed because he hasn't read book 6 yet (he's still rereading book 5) and he went on newsgroups to try to find the ebook version since he prefers to read on his pda. Anyway the subject line of the ebook in the newsgroup was 'SNAPE IS THE HBP!' . Isn't that obnoxious? I refused to affirm it one way or the other but I think Ryan will realize it's true pretty early on. :\

hahaha

LOUNGE... i got a PM about it....

but when i tried to click to view it, it was like, blocked

Same here. This book didn't really captivate me like the ones before did. I mean I still enjoyed reading it, but it's not like I had to carry the book with me when going to the loo for a tinkle or out for a cigarette break (which is usually the case when I read a good book I simply cannot put down).

One annoying thing though is that it's been so long since I read the other books that I've almost completely forgotten what happened. I know I should have looked for summaries on the net to refresh my memory, but I didn't, so that spoiled it some.

And... dammit, this is stupid, but I had a crush on Snape in the movies (Alan Rickman mmm), so I really, really didn't want him to be evil!
