So I couldn't sleep so I went for a drive to clear my mind and work on some quiet writers block ultimately ended up parking halfway up the driveway [mind you i parked around 430 am im on adderall there it is] and sat on my phone shopping but primarily reading and writing and albeit smoked a couple cigarettes around 4 45 am with all windows shut but the sunroof half open have one of the cup holder ash trays but all windows up ick in a brand new car :( I was there a while but then stopped smoking cigarettes till about 645 when but fucking the husband landlord comes walking down the driveway at 645 walking the dog and had his hands up in the air shaking his head like wtf are you doing.

And I'm clearly sitting there intently on my phone all windows down at this point sunroof open watching the sunrise [had had them open for a while after stopping smoking] and he just comes marching.over what the heck are you doing and I'm like I went for a drive I couldn't sleep and now I'm doing some work on my phone and mind you I had my ashtray sitting in the cup holder and a pack of parliaments sitting there but also mind u there house and our apartment is about quarter of a mile farther straight up hill on this private road with three other families. I was almost on the interatate a mile down thw private road.

When i indicate I'm doing his only reaction is you know, we don't want ANY SMOKING ANYWHERE ON OUR PROPERTY [mind u the man smokes cigars] and when we first toured as we were inside she said no smokers and we both said no naturally I assumed indoor then on the app it asks again so I wrote social smoker exclusively outdoors. So for the entire year I walked on egg shells after she yelled at me for smoking a cigarette on the porch with a sealable butt can filled with water I was ashing into. So then he's no smoking anywhere on our property and when they gave us a new lease they put it in high lighter like we are children no smoking anywhere on the property OR GET THIS the ROAD. and also highlighted was NO PETS after telling us they were very open to them as they have a dog that christ if that fucking thing gets out for a minute you'd swear Paris was burning.

In addition after living here a year and without fail the rent is in their mail box 24 hours in advance in cash every month. They went ahead and for no explained reason raised our rent by a total of 600 a year. Though interestingly she now too has retired this year and they vacation [often extravagantly] like 8 times a year no joke ummm gee I wonder why that happened.

Also mind u we are model tenants my boyfriend you'd swear has developed icd living here. We keep the place spotless truly I'd have ZERO qualms about eating a four course meal off the floors. We almost never have guests aside from my mom my dad and a 40 something year old friend and my friend liz all extremely seldom and all extremely classy people. Like Im not out picking up junk boxes to be strewn around the yard.

We don't ever use the canoes or kayaks we have availible to us we never even go in their space we have to park along basically the middle of the driveway so that they can have acess to all 3 garages so that on occasion when he feels like taking his Honda 2000 out [which mind you only gets taken out during the summer] he can rather then giving it to us as parking or simply asking the night before to clear a way out for him that I'd accept.

AND THEN comes down patronizingly to my mother and u don't pull shit like that w my mom people think I can be a bitch when called for WOO she is a fierce ticket, then he yelled at my friend who's in her forties I'm 27 because she was attempting to manaeuver the little space we have aND while being forced to abruptly turn to avoid my fathers ruNing car walks over to her and begins scolding her like a child for her wheel going off the pavement by 2 inches, then I had to back all the way out and do like an 8 point turn because he had shit all over the driveway no where to turn around and as I'm leaving and get out of the driveway onto our road he YELLS my name while I'm on the phon with the fucking STATE and he can see I'm on the phone and he comes over M... I'M TRYING TO GROW GRASS OVER HERE AND I'M SEEING TIRE MARKS ALL OVER THE YARD YEAH FUCKING RIGHT I felt like b saying YOU NEED TO SLOW DOWN AND TAKE ANOTHER MINUTE TO LEAVE this driveway that's ALL IT TAKES AnOTHER minute. NASTY AND CONDESCENSION IT'LL MAKE YOU PUKE. THE STATE REP HEARD THE WHOLE THING LIKE WTF I WAS ON AN EXTREMELY SERIOUS PHONE CALL and was attempting to get them to understand fully my side WAY TO GO AND MAKE ME LOOK LIKE AN ADS YOU DUMB FUCK.

And my mom and friend it was because they can never seem to park in the appropriate place according to him and when they do they apparently have once or twice inched off the pavement while attempting to avoid other cars and ultimately ran over some dirt that had bulbs underneath, the flowers came up just fine. Also mind you after parking your car is then being scraped up by the protruding tree branches and general wooods. Funny everything else is pruned like an uptown eye brow waxing but that area left to go wild.

Little do they know I've been hanging on for my life since contracting Babesia Duncan + Acute then systemic Lyme disease. I have a 43% higher chance of just dropping dead for no apparent reason availible to the naked eye.
And also when he was coming down the driveway he was like snooping in my car through the sunroof in through the windows and then says we don't want any smoking anywhere on the property or the road. It's like ummm was I smoking did I miss something ? I'm allowed to have cigarettes and an ash tray in my own car if I so desire thank you.

The point is you made both my friend and my mother feel so uncomfortable a place they once found happiness and comfort in as iits beautiful and this is my first home and more importantly my first home living with a six year partner.
You can't f****** charge $950 a month for a 1 bed 1 bath kitchen/living room minute and then expect people to not even live here. Like I swear they are pissed I've been home the last 5 months. I was wrongfully terminated and ultimately the state is going after the company and so Intern I decided to take my unemployment benefits and roll back in 3 online courses and have my BA by August only a 9 year work in progress. on the other positive side note I also had an exceptional interview for a job that I would love love love yesterday so here's hoping for that. but is that any justification to go ahead and treat a tenant who seriously is quieter than a mouse all day long when I'm here if I'm not sleeping a result of the line / other infectionthey literally don't even see me until it's time that I have chosen to go out for the day and then I leave and I do not come back until I am absolutely certain I'm ready to be back home and they are have most likely gone to bed.

And last but not least my favorite the spills of doom. Well my boyfriend is a mechanic on the side so of course drives a 90s car w 0 payment and he can tinker around with it. Well his car was leaking a. A variety of fluids in different places on the driveway. The two of us being unaware of it actually don't even notice. Until I'm taking out the trash sorted into 16 variations of recycling and the wife corners me "we need to talk" her favorite line.

At which point she proceeds to tell me that I'm repeatedly dumping my drinks on the pavement. When I politely protest I have zero recollection of ever doing such a thing completely ignored. Simply, "OK WELL I'M GOING TO HAVE TO GO AHEAD AND ASK YOU TO BE A LITTLE MORE MINDFUL." Gladly when youre a little more mindful of leaving your roast beef beaten box in place of your mouth in public that'd be a start sour puss.

All that said they are more then happy to walk 3 feet once a month to pick up a grand cash from the mail box but a tenant trays the outdoors DIFFERENTLY THEN S MUSEUM ?! BLASPHOMY. OH AND BY THE WAY YEAH WE TOTALLY DON'T MIND THAT THEY SIT ON ONE OF THEIR DECKS UNDER OUR WINDOW AND SMOKES HIS HORRID CIGARS FOR HOURS IT'S AWFUL BUT FOR ME TO WALK DEEP INTO THE WOODS TO SMOKE 1 CIGARETTE IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE.

This seems to have come on rather suddenly but it may have just been building and I was so immersed in work I never saw them [exactly what they want I'm sure] and their behavior on a regular basis but I'm finding myself to truly dislike them and that's hard for me.

Either way this is BOTHERING me placing undue stress on our relationship and is based on the most trivial events one could imagine. Either way I grow increasingly more uncomfor table by the day and I'm sorry but I don't want to be funding two ass holes trips around the globe. Honestly exit NH and go back to NJ.

BUT REALLY ANY IDEAS SUGGESTIONS APPROACHES TO MAKING ME FEEL BETTER ABOUT THIS ? THANK DEARLY IF YOU READ THAT ALL.

They don't seem like nice people, but they're not doing anything "wrong." It's their property and as long as they're not doing anything illegal like discriminating against a protected classification of people, they can make the rules. It's the same with the rent. They can raise it when your lease is up to whatever they feel the market will bear.

If it's too much of a hassle to live there then it's time to leave this beautiful but rigid place and find one with fewer rules.

But it sounds like you have a lease, so unless they let you out of it, you may have to stay until it's over.

Leave.

And if they won't let you out of the lease...

Smoke anwhere you want... maybe you'll smoke.... "inside"... too.

That could give them a reason to keep the deposit. If it's a non smoking property they can claim they need the deposit to have extra cleaning done.

^ That is exactly what will happen.

Play by their rules. If you don't like them, leave. If you have a lease, ask them if they'll let you out early. But if you mess with them, you can expect retaliation and no one in the law (police, courts, etc) will be sympathetic to your side.

In fact, don't forget to take pictures of everything in pristine condition when you leave. That way they can't claim anything funny and you have proof to get your deposit back, if they attempt to withhold.

Don't just do photos, do VIDEO.... do a walk around... and show how they keep the plants clean on one area, but car-damaging on the other...

Show date and time from a newspaper or something too..

I did have neighbors call in a noise complaint once. I did not notice the cop until I opened the door.

The officer was actually pretty cool about everything. I had been smoking weed and was obviously drunk and it was about noon. He asked me if I had turned the music down when he came up and I said no. He said he believed me because I did not move my bong. I was like shit are you gonna arrest me and he said no because I was not making a noise violation and I wasn't bothering anyone plus this is not the first time my neighbors called wolf. So he said to turn the music off and turn in up twice as loud after he left and no one would respond that day.

Later that day I waited till both my upstairs neighbors who I figured out called in the noise complaint because they would stamp their feet on the floor all the time and they also had called in noise complaints on everyone else. It was a couple that I confronted. They gave me some shit about trying to raise a family and I told them maybe get a better job and move out the slums or maybe if it is so bad maybe his wife should get a job too. I also informed them as to what noises they make when they fuck and their crying baby was not exactly quiet.

Seeing how the rent was like 400 a month, you can't really expect to have it all. The walls were paper thin. Most people that lived there were either college students or young people who did not make very much money. It wasn't even a step up from housing projects other than less crime. So I guess if anyone there qualified for section 8 they would have moved there.

I took a risk confronting my neighboors and the conversation got rather intense where the guy called me a drunk lunatic and I called him a pathetic loser and that if he can't support his wife than maybe she should contribute to the house hold finances if they wanted to live in a better environment. In the end, the backed off. I wasn't bumping loud music, they were just ridiculous. Its like you couldn't even watch tv without pissing these people off but I mean we could both hear each others conversations.

It was really lousy of them to call the law on me knowing that they really just wanted to get me caught up in drug charges. It was good that the officer had dealt with these people before because he had probable cause to search my house and arrest me but didn't because it was an obvious set up. My neighbors smelled weed and dialed 911 at fucking noon over music that was not loud. Confronting them was a risk as I could have gotten comunicating threats (they could have said anything they wanted and it would be my word against theirs), I was kind of threatening them, I was intoxicated, I had drugs and weapons in my apartment, and so on. But it did get them to leave me the fuck alone.

I was glad when they moved out. They were the only neighbors I did not know and I make an effort to meet my next door neighbors and be cool with them so they don't ever call the law for any reason whether its loud music or people doing stupid shit like walking around naked on drugs. Its best to meet your neighbors and just say if my music is loud, just call me, so no matter what happens they will call you before they call the law, plus it puts them at ease a bit for when they wanna get down.

Usually whenever I move somewhere new, I introduce myself to my neighbors as soon as possible because it gets harder later. You just want to make small chat. I try to mind my own business in apartment complexes but I kind of like to have breathing room so I would want at least thicker walls or more relaxed neighbors if I was to move into an apartment. Personally I would prefer a trailer and some privacy or an apartment. Having a house is great. My advice is just don't ever throw a large party. It is not worth the effort the next day let alone the risk you take when people you don't know show up or even if you have alot of people over and your stuff goes missing so I do not invite many people over at once.

Just as a follow up on these two comments, if your leaving - set your leave date one week before the end of your contract. Once your ready to leave advise the landlord and ask them to do a preliminary walk through (and record it).

If they see anything that would cause them to retain your deposit (say for the smell of cigarette smoke, scuffs on paintwork etc) then you still have one week of contract to have these fixed at your expense (cheaper than losing your deposit). If everything is fine, get them to sign for the keys (date and time) and that everything is in good condition and your deposit will be repaid.

Having a video or photos not showing handing over of keys, landlord signing etc - they can simply say that you finished filming (then broke something) or that the house had a horrible smell etc.
