So my stupid fucking job said I can't wear my mohawk up, nor can it be black and near-white blonde anymore. It must be all one color and natural. They let me wear it the way I wanted to for almost a month, and NOW its a problem... So now im wondering if I should go all blonde, or maybe super red? Honestly, I just posted this because im fucking frustrated, but input would be nice as well =D

i don't think your job is stupid just for having a traditional or conservative view of employee appearance.

my advice would be to change it to something "all one color and natural". if that's a dealbreaker for you, find another job.

Its the 21st century, black and blonde hair is a regular thing. thats what im having an issue with.

Ive had this issue too when i am teaching, and my hair wasnt nearly as extreme as yours!

But hey, if the job is worth it you gotta do what you gotta do. A word about going red though, incase your work decides its not natural enough...

...I had died my hair A really Dark red color, and my teaching advisors wanted it natural. It took me six months though to get the red coloring out of my hair because im naturally a dark blonde the red just WOUlD NOT leave my hair!

In the end i used stuff to remove die from your hair, and went dark brown.

the fact that you have an issue with it is irrelevant. the management at your company gets to decide what goes and what doesn't at their company.

again, you have a choice - if it's a dealbreaker, find another job. to any reasonable observer, what they're asking you to do is hardly an undue burden.

I agree with neko and ali here - yeah it does suck, but really, they call the shots and they pay you. If you can, start looking to work for a company that are a little more progressive - not so conservative? You mentioned that things changed a month ago - was there a handover in management, a change in policy?

No, no new people came in or anything, the management's the same. Its not like im a lawyer, i work at a grocery store... They hired me 4 years ago with spikey red hair, they know me and it didnt matter up until now...

i don't think that asking staff to have a professional* appearance is 'a dick move'.

op sounds like a spoiled brat, imho.

* i recognize that what constitutes a professional appearance is a discussion in itself.

she wasn't bitching that much about the job ali, just a little venting. you are making a bigger deal out of it than she did. calling her a spoiled brat is unnecessary. perhaps you can spare some of that respect you have for authority and share it with fellow bluelighters??!! IMHO

anyway sappy, i think red is a good choice, and i like the cut, it isn't that crazy. are they asking you to take out piercings too?

Exactly. I think that with entry-level customer service positions, a bit of leeway with personal appearance should be one of the meager benefits that one enjoys.

^ i don't see anything from the op about working in an entry-level customer service position so i'm not sure where you get that?

that said, it still depends entirely on the environment. even if that is the job in question, surely you agree that the standards for an entry-level customer service job in a 7/11 differ from the standards for an entry-level customer service job in an upmarket hotel? and in either case, the management of the company get to decide what those standards are...

this isn't a case of the man putting the kids down. to me, this makes the op sound like a spoiled brat not getting her way. again, if it's a dealbreaker, find another job where you are allowed to style your hair however you like...

I'm guessing that the OP works behind the counter at a grocery store (unless she's working elsewhere in the grocery store?) - which would make it customer-facing. In many industries, the rules that apply for customer-facing and non-customer facing are different. I work for a Federal Government agency and am not customer facing, so (within reason) i can wear what i like - i can show my tattoo, have piercings, etc - however; if i were dealing with the public, i'd be required to dress corporately. Perhaps management have decided to tighten the screws on how they want to present the company image to their customers?

This is where I got that:

Sure. I also do not expect circumstances in life to be fair. :P

Personally I find it interesting they made comment about the hair but not the facial piercings, you'd think usually those things would go hand in hand.

What did they say when they asked you to change the hair, Sappy? I do find it a bit strange for an employer to hire someone with a look that isn't that 'traditional/professional' and then suddenly decide they're not ok with it without advising a policy change/that they've decided they want to transition the image they present to customers etc

Asladair's on the money though, if you don't like it, look for a new job. My husband has a large tattoo on his forearm; when he got it people quite rightly pointed out that it would limit either his career prospects or ability to wear short sleeves, but thankfully in this day and age and in the industry he works, there are plenty of open minded employers that care more about his skill set than how he looks.

Sappy, if you work in a grocery store you have customer service experience, are there any clothes, music etc stores locally where you've seen staff with less than traditional looks? Maybe you could ask them if they have any openings?
