Hi everyone...

I just got a guitar and I somehow managed to forget to get a book to teach me anything.

I know the G chord though... off to a great start :\

Does anyone know of a good legit website that lists some basic chords and/or good lessons? I been looking around on Google but its harder to find a concentrated site with good info than I expected.

If I'm in the wrong place, feel free to move this but I have a feeling there are prolly a lot of guitards in this forum :D

As a self-taught guitarist I'd say you're on the right track. When I first started learning I went to the public library and checked out all the beginner's books for acoustic guitar. I don't remember which ones I checked out but I know Mel Bay puts out some good books.

Good luck, you're starting out on a fun and rewarding journey.

When I first started learning guitar, I had a guitar tutor. He taught me musical notes, but if your gonna self learn yourself. I'd learn all the chords, then learn some songs using tabs. Although I don't recommended tabs if you wanna start a band or anything. Most bands learn musical notes, scales,a lot of stuff that tabs don't offer.

im self taught, started playing about 7 years ago. started off googling tabs to songs i wanted to learn

Honestly learning how to read music is something I wish I had done, so I'm a little hesitant to show you this, but its fun.

This site/program is cool because you can find tabs by certain artists, and then play them to see how they sound. You can even make you own. I used it starting out and have actually written a song or two on it.

thanks guise!!

LUCKILY i know how to read music, so that will be helpful and won't deter me from learning :)

MY FINGERS HURT. i must be doinitrite

Keep going until you build up the calluses. It gets a lot easier after that. :)

I find bass guitar almost creates trapped nerves due to the thickness of the strings, and six stringed guitars shred your skin to the point where you can peel it off. :!

Once I figured out the basics, I could pretty much play by ear. I think that's one of the best ways to play. I never bothered learning scales or anything. That sort of thing never interested me. :\

Just out of curiousity, what kind of music are you interested in playing?. :)

I'm fender freak. Love playing guitar. Learn to read sheet music not just tabs you will be able to play anything (= may help for school to. My buddy learned sheet music and got free money for college playing guitar.

Learn your chords first of all. I can't emphasis that enough.

I'm a Fender freak too. They make such beautiful instruments. They make this ukulele with a Telecaster headstock that I want so bad.

its pretty simple, when you see the red dot on the line you push the red dot on your guitar, when its the green dot you push the green dot, its pretty self explanatory imo its just a mater of good timing

don't fuck with bar chords, for now just learn the basics. get use to playing the A chord by holding down the correct strings using only your index finger. you could use all three fingers for the chord but thats to much cramming imo.
start to finger pick to, songs like ''house of the rising sun'', A minor is your friend, use him and abuse him. learn to switch from A minor to C, you keep ur index finger at the same spot, you just move your other fingers up(as shown on the tab map).
get use to finger picking with all your fingers except for your thumb (until you know what your doing). have fun! oh yeah use the record thing in ur computer to record ur shit, and listen to it back to show you your strengths and weakness's. :)

So much Fender love in here, what about the Gibsons? Set neck, stop-tail bridge, amazing sustain, tone tone tone and they don't feel like you are going to break them whenever you play. I've played high-end strats and teles (my creative cohort is a fender fanatic) but I keep coming back to my Les Paul. Although I wouldn't mind a Tele with a Humbucker in the neck position and a sc in the bridge, get that Chicago/Rolling Stones vibe going.

to start having fun right away learn power chords, the blues scale, and the phyrigian scale, you'll be able to play some decent sounding shit right off the bat.

I taught myself. Just get a book with chords, ect and learn the basics and it will come to you I'm sure. I mean, I learned by ear so idk.

definitely try learning by ear. as much as country music sucks put on a country stations and just try and figure out the chords. you wont get any crazy chord progressions in modern country.

If you are a visual learner, a great thing to do is go on youtube and type in "acoustic guitar lesson" or "beginner guitar lesson" or even "how to play wonderwall" (or some other easy song you like). There are so many great videos!

be careful, i started learning 3 years ago and now i consider my guitar my only true friend, along with the ones in my head and the thought i write down... lyrics... i suggest if your interested in writing lyrics, start writing them right away, the more you write the better, even if it doesnt sound good at the time it's all practice and you might come back to it and think wow what the fuck, i could use this... i recomend getting lessons every few months at least just to make sure you not teaching yourslef bad habits, try different teachers too gain different perspectives from different teachers... some cheap some expensive, wish i had
