Hello everyone. I am new to this forum and I really need some guidance or suggestions and don't have a lot of time to study the user guide. Could someone please direct me to the proper section. I am 24 hour caregiver for my my most dear mother. She gets along pretty darn well but we have hit a snag. She has very bad arthritis. Anyway for many years she has been on the Tylenol/percocet tablet no. 10. I felt it was not working for her as well. She never experienced any side affects. Anyway, her doctor of many years said we could switch over to Oxycodone 10. One every four hours. Anyway, she wants to sleep more and then I decreased the amount. Also seems to babble when sleeping. The trouble is that she has been fighting an infection the same time and on an antibiotic. So, I don't know if it is the change in pain med. Does an Oxycodone 10 work that much differently than a Percocet 10 with tylenol? I just want her to be comfortable and get my old mom back. I guess I should change back? Please thank you in advance. Any direction is most gratefully appreciated.

Both drugs use the same opioid painkiller, Oxycodone.
The Tylenol in the old pills was a limiting factor to how many she could take per day due to the liver toxicity of it.
How many of the old tablets was she taking per day, and how many Oxys is she taking now?

I just can't thank you enough for your prompt reply. The old pills she was prescribed six per day. I usually gave her one every four hours. also, I tried to give her just five a day because on a good day she was sleeping through the night and then I didn't. However, on some times when she was having a bad time and not often I would giver her two at a time. (only one time a day). I just felt that she was becoming so used to them over the years they weren't doing much. As you know, it pretty sad that the healing community won't try and help somebody age 98 feel good!! Anyway, how about I try her on a half? any suggestions. I only know I think that giving her one every four hours was maybe a bit much in the beginning. Any thoughts? I just wish they wouldn't make her sedated but made her have energy. as I said she is now off the antibiotic as of Saturday. I don't know anymore. I just want to help her be the best she can be. I await your opinion.

dear Phobos, I don't know but I guess I am replying to you. I had an additional comment. Maybe if I know for certain my mom is free of the infection I will better assess her actions. Even though she is more sedate she is smiling and that makes me feel good. I would like her to get up and walk too. so I may just have to consider she is very sensitive to the new pain med and return to the old ones.

@Pinkquartz
How many 10mg Oxycodone pills has she been taking per day?
How many mg of Oxycodone were in each of the old pills?
The concern would that if she is now taking a higher dose of Oxycodone than before, she has now a higher tolerance and switching to her old meds would be uncomfortable.

Hey and welcome to Bluelight @Pinkquartz ♥️
As for your question as in where should you go to ask about your mother's situation then i would suggest heading over to Other Drugs , and like you did here, title the thread with something to go along with the 'body' of the thread and explain what is going on with her situation.

Also if you have a few moments then check out The how to use the search function thread, because there is a possibility that someone might have experienced something similar (might not be verbatim but could give you enough information to think options.

Please let me know if you need help with anything else as in navigating Bluelight, or if you just want to bounce some ideas off of me, I'm just a PM away. ♥️
Take care!

Thank you for suggestions. Everything you wrote is really helpful. This forum is a great resource for those who may need help. I do need help especially how to even reply to posts and navigate. I will take the time. For instance, I'm not sure I am even replying correctly to your answer at this point. I know it sounds old, but have a great day and I mean it!

Howdy @Pinkquartz .

Are you on your phone or computer? Both are totally different when it comes down to trying to memorize where to find what, but the cool thing is that it isn't the end of the world if you were to make a mistake. It's all about learning something new right?

One of my tasks to do here is to revamp the new member guide because I don't want you or anyone to have that difficult of a time here trying to find the best route of Harn Reduction here on Bluelight. So keep a lookout for that in the days to come!!

Please reach out to me via private message if you do need help navigating the forum, or with help being directed somewhere that would best suit what you need help with, okay? 🙂

Hey @Pinkquartz

Percocet is a brand name for a combination product. There are many drugs out there on the pharmaceutical market that have been patented as essentially "new" medicines that are, well, obviously not new at all. I have mixed feelings about products like Oxycodone/APAP or more broadly Opioids/NSAIDS and the like. In one way, they are beneficial due to their convenience. Both drugs, in this case, the Oxycodone and Acetaminophen are both used for their painkilling effects (analgesia), but both work in different ways, upon different systems in the body.

This convenience also leads to a great deal of unnecessary confusion for folks who really don't understand a lot about these things. For many of us here, these things are so second nature, we hardly think about them, to you and your mother, I understand that this is really not the case. It would be better, I feel, to educate and prescribe the Opioid alone, as this is the drug with the most serious and wide-ranging effects upon a persons health, personality and lifestyle. Most folks are already familiar with drugs like Acetaminophen as they are commonly used, effective, over the counter painkillers with good efficacy and limited side effects when used appropriately.

So, now you have someone asking questions abut "Percocet" specifically, when the real knowledge they need is 90% wrapped up in the knowledge of the Opioid. I believe it's easy enough for a doctor to say, "take xxxMG APAP with your Oxycodone". It also limits the ability of the patient to make smaller dosage changes more frequently for either drug.

On to your real question though. You should probably have a basic understanding of APAP, as stated above. Most people do. In regard to your wondering about side effects like: sleep problems, talking in sleep, general changes in lifestyle, that is almost certainly going to be related to the Oxycodone as opposed to the Acetaminophen. Frankly, I don't see what benefit or even significant difference is hoped for in switching a pain patient from Percocet to plain Oxycodone without Acetaminophen. For people with normal, healthy livers, I see no good reason to exclude the APAP and your doctor seems to be implying that there is some kind of huge difference between the two when at the end of the day, the difference is as simple and minute as you, I or any one of us being in pain and either taking or not taking a Tylenol for said pain. The cause and effect are rather simply and a medical doctor is not really required to infer such a difference, as a person should be able to infer for themselves.

In short, I really don't see what kind of groundbreaking conclusion they are hoping to draw from such a change. From my perspective, it could only lead to more pain? Is there something specifically wrong with your loved-one's reaction to Acetaminophen?

Use us like an object my friend, it's what we like!!!!

The only thing I can think of is that it is possible to take more Oxycodone per day if there's no APAP in the pills.
