There seems to be a shortage of information online about the actual effectiveness of Guanfacine, an alpha-2 agonist (same class as clonidine). name brands Tenex and an extended release version Intuniv.

As a med student I need to spend very long hours in class and studying, and without pharmaceutical assistance i end up sleeping or surfing bluelight. I've tried studying on all the common ones, adderall, vyvanse, focalin, etc... and they work well, but I build a tolerance extremely quickly, and can't afford(financially or healthwise) to be popping a 30mg addy every 3 hours just to be able to concentrate. For example today 70mg addy IR, and 60mg vyvanse. Which leads me to apologizing for the length of this post.

I'm looking for input from people who have taken guanfacine to treat their ADD/ADHD, either taking it alone or in conjunction with a stimulant, and whether it was effective for them or not. I'm especially interested in how it has effected their ability to focus on tasks like studying, working, etc... for long periods of time, as opposed to the other symptoms of adhd like hyperactivity, fidgetting, etc... because those aren't a problem for me.

So basically, how would you rate guanfacine in terms of:

Concentration
Avoiding distraction
Motivation
Mood
Attention to detail
Alert/sleepy

And then whether you think it's worth me pursuing a prescription to try it out.

Oh, and If you happen to take it with a stimulant, did it change the effectiveness? For example if you used to take x mg vyvanse daily, did you need more or less to achieve the same effect now that the guanfacine is in your system?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Did you every try it? I was just prescribed it and after reading all the side effects to go through was wondering if it was worth it.
