Gross misperceptions about individuals and stimulant use

There have been many times when I've been really glad people have these kinds of stereotypes. It helped a lot when I used to beg for money that I didn't look sufficiently like a stereotypical junkie.



I'd much rather hang out with my fellow heroin addicts. Tweakers never shut the fuck up.

And If they're the paranoid type, keep em the fuck away but I wouldn't prefer to be around the typical opiates user around my area. Tried that once, got my whole ass car stolen and sold for heroin.

Mmm.. OK I'll admit that's a risk.

Personally nobody I knew would steal your car... OK most of of the people I knew wouldn't steal your car. Well not if they knew you anyway. You can only turn a car into money once, you can turn people into money over and over.

The person that did it was someone i would have at the time called family. In the end, i opened myself up to get fucked over and shouldn't have thought that she would value our friendship over the overpowering need to get that fix. It was just a bit fucked up because my car was also my home and had everything i owned in it, phone, clothes, etc which all is history and since been replaced

Yeah that actually sounds exactly like something I would have done when I was using. Opiates really fuck with your priorities. When I did stuff like that I always found ways to lie to myself and tell myself I could somehow fix it after I got my heroin.

Heroin would be the end of me I think. It was the end of my brother in 2014. I’ve been addicted to alcohol, benzos and opiates (oxycodone pills). Never IVed anything.

I smoke meth but the addiction is nowhere near as bad as the downers. People treat meth exactly the same as heroin pretty much though — both hard drugs that fuck you up for life if they don’t kill you. The ignorance and stigma around drugs still amazes me.

In Australia alcohol is almost encouraged. I read a book on brain chemistry by a doctor whose life’s work is detox and rehab, and guess what the most powerful drug (in terms of how many neurotransmitter systems it affects) is?

I'm sorry about your brother. Yeah Australia's attitude towards alcohol is fucked.

I tend to think meth probably is of a similar level of destructiveness as heroin, it's just not equally destructive for every individual, and they're not equally destructive in every characteristic. Just overall. .I can use meth with no desire to keep using it, but I can't do that with opioids. While others are the reverse.

I didn't even get angry about it. I get that heroin addiction is something serious. I think that's why I never dove into opiates at all or took any liking to them. I don't hold grudges with anybody, it isn't worth my own peace of mind. She's since tried to apologize and I've accepted

Learned a good life lesson in this event to stop trusting people so much just because they gave me mediocre companionship

There are plenty of people who are well-put together even with frequent stimulant usage... and then there are plenty of people who aren't. Virtually the same for alcohol or any other recreational substance to be honest. People only notice the addicts affecting other people's lives negatively by stealing and doing the craziest things from psychosis-induced episodes because the functional ones do not want to attract to attention to themselves. They probably stay indoors browsing the internet while stimmed out lol. Although, I still think stimulants have this veil with many users where even with functional addicts using gradually affects their behavior far more than they realize. The crash sometimes is more obvious to others than the euphoric up. It's awkward when someone is wide-eyed, gloomy, sluggish, and a dead quiet zombie with enlarged pupils.

Well...I have , ages ago, my ex husbands best mate lived with us and he and another regular of our crew were heroin users but did not even mention it in front of anyone else as everyone else were speed freaks, took acid and ecstasy and meth.

Meth addicts sometimes do deserve and are the stereotype, they do exist but yeah not all are in that way of life. There's plenty of homeless, toothless zombies in the city. There's a lot of crime. Ending up like that is easier if you have nothing and a mental illness, are marginalised anyway.

Some sex workers I've gotten to know as they're mates of mates are toothless and pretty haggard yet have clients all the time. Maybe because they are dealers as well, I dunno.

Poverty is the main issue, people with money would present better and have the resources to look after themselves.

They only really get outed when they fuck up though.

Back when I was using heavily I'd usually use some meth for maybe up to a couple days every month or so at most. Whereas I had 2-3 shots of heroin every day.

At the peak of my heroin addiction in late 2017, I was at the point where I was one of those people homeless begging on the streets, prostituting myself, that kinda stuff. Pretty much 100% of my time not spent getting money for heroin was spent using heroin with other heroin addicts. Mainly my partner at the time.

So obviously I have way more experience with other heroin users, but we knew people who were more meth addicts too. Though because of my social circle at the time they were probably more likely to be the stereotypical ones.

I don't doubt there are meth addicts who are pretty high functioning, but in terms of low functioning meth vs heroin addicts. Id much rather be around other heroin addicts. They're both fucked up, both likely to steal shit. But iunno, the meth users seem much more likely to get violent. They never shut the fuck up. Get paranoid about bullshit.

Plus I'd be much more concerned about being sexually assaulted by a meth addict than a heroin addict.

In my area, the city is riddled with crack, and none of the crackies I see have it "together". Meth is rather new, my DOC, so people using it seem more put together.

Though I did used to run with a crowd around Harvard University and they would be shooting meth in public right outside the school and act very psychotic.

Like Jess said, heroin users seem to be more low-key. Once people in my area get the meth they just give no fucks. Crack, same deal but at least they're not tweaked out for days on end. They more or less congregate in the same area, near the cops ironically.
