Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre retires after 17 seasons

That's why I don't watch stuff like ESPN much. They'll get hung up on one player or team and give you reports about it every minute they can, all while ignoring other things that are going on in the sports world. It's ridiculous.

the worst part of it all is this just shows you how much of a business venture the NFL is. Brett Favre has a great streak of games played for a QB. it is a sad day when this streak ends because he is essentially, kicked off the team.

I'm a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan. I bawled my eyes out like a little girl when they won the Super Bowl a few years back, but I've always appreciated Green Bay and Favre. The NFL has lost one of the greatest ever...

But that's just the thing, he wasn't kicked off the team. He retired, then wanted to come back which the Packers happily agreed to allow, then he backs out at the last minute, then he decides he wants to come back again. This time, instead of talking to the Packers behind close doors, he decided to uses his family, friends, and agent to trash the Packers in the media. After that, he asks to be released. When that didn't happen, he decided to throw a tantrum. He refuses to cooperate to find a trade partner. Why? Because he wants one things, and that's to play for the Vikings. If that doesn't happen, he'll be more than happy to drag down the Packers organization. Even though no team in their right mind would release Favre.

All Favre has done is show that he's no different than TO, Chad Johnson, and the like. He thinks he above the game and people should kiss his ass. When those two players I mentioned pull shit like this, people bitch about it. When Favre does it, it's okay. Ridiculous.

oh wow. you have really changed your tune about Brett Favre huh birdie? I feel you about the Vikings though. I wouldn't wane Favre anywhere NEAR Adrian Peterson, who will no doubt become the NFL's greatest running back of all time. if he stays healthy.

Favre no better than Chad Johnson? I think that may be stretching it...

Yep thats the NFL for you. Look at all the shit thats happened in the past few years. Spygate, TO, Johnson it's bullshit. Just add Favre to the list.

I still like Favre as a player, but all this drama has left a bitter taste in my mouth. I appreciate all he did as Packer and don't think there's anyone who's more fun to watch.

How Favre's handling this situation is akin to how Chad Johnson would handle. Yes, Chad Johnson has been worse over his career, but all meant is this showing that Favre is just like those superstars who whine when every little thing doesn't go their way. The difference is most people would be all over the backs of those players, but apparently it's okay when Favre does it.

favre actually is considering taking the money too...its gets moar pathetic hour by hour
You know, the more I read about giving him $20mil, the more I like it. My first reaction was, "well, that's stupid", but not so much anymore. Apparently the Packers had offered him this package before everything went south. It would be $20mil (might be $25mil) over 10 years and wouldn't count against the cap (I think). It's not $20mil to go away and stay away, instead Favre would be used for marketing. Which essentially is no different than hiring someone in a marketing position (except more money), which is exactly the position Favre would be occupying. That way Favre retires as a Packer and is still an active part of the organization.

This isn't the first time a deal like this has been offered to a retired player. Both Elway and Marino were offered such deals and accepted them. Since the Packers won't release Favre and Favre won't talk to any the teams that the Packers are trying to trade him to, a deal like this seems like the best resolution at this point. (Though it would somewhat confirm my suspicion that Favre wasn't 100% committed to playing to begin with.)

maybe someone can explain this to me:

why cant the packers just allow favre to come back and then just sit his ass?

after thinking about this at work (cause what else is there to do really) for a week, i think favre should take the money, 20+ million over 10 years, be the media darling, parade him around, until rodgers gets hurt after the 3rd game, guess who comes runnin back with fresh legs...hahahahh i can see it now

it looks like favre and packers management have put their differences aside. he's coming to camp and will compete with rodgers for the starting job, which basically means favre will be starting the opening game. if, for some far fetched reason, rodgers gets the starting spot, will favre's consecutive game streak come to an end?

I'm not convinced this isn't a ploy. Favre comes to camp, Packers say their starter job is up for grabs, all the problems are in the past and it's one big happy family. Well, I call bullshit. Of course they're going to act like that, after all the Packers wanted to trade him and this is the best way to raise his trade value. Their waiting for an injury to a QB from another team, or a QB to under preform, or simply trying to raise Favre's trade value by making it seem like a trade is no longer the only option they have to get the Favre problem resolved. They've been steadfast about Rodgers being the starter and I highly doubt they changed their mind over one weekend. Or so I hope...

Personally, as a Packers fan, I don't want Favre back anymore. We moved on and we should stay the course. Right now the Packers are in the best position to move on from Favre. They have a QB that's had three years of learning the in and outs who's ready to play. We risk losing Rodgers, which means starting back at zero when Favre retires. Favre is only short term, Rodgers is long term. Hell, there's nothing to indicate that Favre will do just as well as he did last season. So soon everyone forgets about his piss poor '05 and '06 season, when many were wondering why he was still playing. Now all of the sudden they think Favre is guaranteed to come back in '07 form, which was one of his best seasons ever, if not his best. Why? He's a year older and hasn't done much this offseason. Eventually, we're going to have to put a first year starter in and right now the Packers are as prepared as any team could be to do just that. Why delay the inevitable?
