This was written on behalf of a request by my good friend Andy. “Write a poem about goths.” And so I complied . . .
Retrieved from the barbaric north
Reaped from the ancient forests
A modern horde of others come forth
Bringing unheard tones to the chorus
Sunken eyes and pale face
Hunkered down in blackened lace
From the urban cathedral this brood we deny
Amongst flying buttresses that scrape at the sky
And what, praytell,
Of this gothic revival?
Caste of dishonor
Forgot we’re filial . . .
Faintly heard murmurs of ruthless pride
Impart on the ear of beastly inhabitants
Whose frail, grasping claws from which we have pried
Impede infection from unwholesome contaminants
Thanks for reminding me of who I am not
Providing a schema against which I fought
And consistent with an affirmation
Of this dark, cavernous nation . ..
