My mate, a gay guy I sometimes use with told me that a trans woman I've met a couple of times got murdered/was found dead in suspicious circumstances on Wednesday evening. She was found on the beat (the gay sex beat) which is around 500m away from my apartment.
I don't do street sex work anymore, that's long in the past, but hearing stuff like this makes me feel really insecure and vulnerable about my safety as a trans person (especially as a sex worker) regardless of living in what is a relatively decent country for transgender rights.
I really wish my trans brothers and especially my trans sister's could live a life of safety. It says a lot about our lives that our two 'holidays' are 'can society please acknowledge our existence' and 'these are all our dead siblings from the past 365 days'.
I'm heading to the beat now to pay my respects. I haven't been here for a while since I stopped working it but there's a group of us going to meet there.
