Opioids Good time to wait before cat starts drinking.

Hello everyone! So kitty cat got prescribed hydromorphone from his doc to help with foot pain. Kitty cat put 2mgs up his nose at 2:00pm. But he forgot there is a dinner at 7:30 and drinks at 9:00pm . Cat doesnt need to drink for the supper but will it be safe to drink at all and how much? cat has NO tolerance to hydro and is a heavy drinker. (If i put this in the wrong spot im sorry mods!)

Kitty cat? Don't do that, just say its you, it wont offer you any legal protection from law enforcement. Plus you were prescribed the drugs, so its not like you shouldn't have them!

Anyway, I would say 2mg is ok for first time use, but maybe go easy on the drink as both are CNS depressants and will make you slower, slur speech etc.

Take the cat to the vets if you're concerned.

edit; also if your cat is persistently being a 'heavy drinker' consider taking it to an AA meeting.

There's no hard and fast rule, other than don't drink heavily on opiates.

Without knowing you very well, I can't say much than just limit it to a few drinks and take it easy.

You should be fine after that amount of time in between dosing opiates and drinking. You were also on a low dose of hydromorphone, which also helps negate some of the risk.

As a general rule, you do not want to mix any CNS depressants (alcohol and benzos, opiates and alcohol, benzos and opiates, etc) as it is one of the most common ways that overdoses occur.

But for your particular situation, only taking 2mg's of hydromorphone and it being 6 hours or so after dosing. You will be fine. Keep your drinks to a minimum though just to be cautious.
