Good Essay on Mirror Neurons - relates to contact highs

I'd imagine that they'vepossible also got a role in the actions of MDMA & other entactogens as it's the mirror neurones that are responsible for the origin of the feelings of empathy and everything that comes from that.

If you like his (VS Ramachandran) style, I can hearily recommend his book 'Phantoms in the Brain' which looks at neural function & conciousness by studying people who have suffered damage to certain areas. Mind you, if you have hypochondriac tendancies it'll give you more nightmares than a library of Stephen King books!

Many thanks for the recommendation. I posted this basically in response to a topic in the Psychedelic Drugs forum - lots of people in there not believing in contact highs :)

I believe in the contact high. I just found the question funny:)

I've seen it in mild form with humans. I have definitely seen it with animals. Especially w/ketamine!!

I always thought it was some strange version of the placebo effect.

This is a speculative hypothesis that has not yet been proven. It does make a lot of sense though.

Well piss my pig! I was looking through the magazine section ofWH Smith's in Newcastle (while my other half was looking for a suitable birthday present for a friend) and there in 'Scientific American' are a couple of articles about autism & the role of mirror neurones. The article about the cause of autism (by V.S. Ramachandran - one of the people concerned with neuroanatomy & function with respect to human conciousness and an excellent author for people without an extensive background in those topics) goes on to discuss possible chemical/pharmacological treatments to reduce the negative inpact of autism on the sufferer; lo and behold this section goes on to say that MDMA is being suggested as the most promising candidate for this role in activating the mirror neurones. I now feel that I'm entitled to blow my own trumpet and tongue-in-cheek say 'great minds think alike' - No doubt followed by my other half bursting into fits of laughter at my bout of mini-megalomania!! =D

Everyone that thinks contact highs are bullshit just never experienced one.
I actually experienced an MDMA contact high this weekend, sitting in a couch in a pub with my friend who had taken necked 3 rather strong E pills. He was wasted - didn't look to happy, but he was-, doped out, rather quiet most of the time, while I got a high that was more like low dose MDMA, stimulated, chatty, empathy.

To me, the explanation for it is the same as when you feel sad when being around sad people, or happy when you're with happy people.
