Good books on the psychedelic state?

Oh no where to start-

The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test- Tom Wolfe. Story of Ken Kesey, the Merry Pranksters, acid and Furthur!

The Psychedelic Experience- Alpert, Metzner, Leary. Rewrite of the Tibetan Book of the Dead...good stuff

Be Here Now- Baba Ram Das (Richard Alpert). Essential book.

Food of the Gods- Terence McKenna. Proposing his mushroom evolution idea.

True Hallucinations- T. McKenna. Possibly the greatest hallucinogenic adventure story. Brilliant, if not bizarre.

DMT: The Spirit Molecule- Dr. Rick Strassman. Pretty sht book in terms of outcomes, but the only book with suh in depth look at DMT

LSD: My Problem Child- Albert Hoffman. A must.

There are many many more books that I could point you to- PiHKAL/TiHKAL, writings by Zoe 7, more books on shamanism, modern use of psychedelics, ancient use etc, checmisty, psychedelic theory etc., psychedelics in the fifites and sixties... Let me know what subjects in particular interest you and I shall add to the list....

I also would suggest some of the Beat poets writings, Ginsberg and co. as wellas Jack Kerouac, either On The Road or the Dharma Bums. Neil Cassady's "The First Third" is a good book....while these guys weren't "hippies" as such, they began the whole movement essentailly and wrote some damn interesting stuff...:)

peyote- by black elk
the electric koolaid acid tests
Peyote Religion: A History (Civilization of the American Indian Series) by Omer C

The Doors of Perception- Aldous Huxley

often published with Heaven and Hell

surprised this has not been mentioned yet....

Cleansing The Doors of Perception- Houston Smith
This book explores the sociological and religious significance/impact of entheogens, in a concise and beautifully informative manner. All psychonauts should give it a shot.

I would read up on Leary's 8-circuit model for consciousness. its all over the net. if it intrigues you check out on Robert Anton Wilson's PROMETHEUS RISING

also, the Illuminatus Trilogy, while a fiction novel, is an excellent read for those getting into psychs

further down the road, once you're bored of the "Hippy" approach to the mind's nether regions and unexplained awkwardness, check out The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind (by Julian James). earth-shattering book.
