Great piece, IcebergSlim. I need to listen to NPR more.

Amazingly, I was just reading "September 11, 2001" in Kingdom of Fear last night, and marvelling at how accurately Thompson had predicted the years to come (this prescience is mentioned in the NPR piece):

The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now -- with somebody -- and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives.

Thompson wrote that the day after the attack.

I had a chance of seeing it at Dallas' Landmark Magnolia. Don't you have it showing there in Los Angeles anywhere? where are you from?

Did he commit suicide or what? I heard his ashes were blasted out a cannon with Johnny Depp and a load of his friends....???

Does anyone know the full story?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIyWkinCsMs

The full story about what?

Yes, Thompson commited suicide. Yes, he had an elaborate private memorial service which included his ashes being shot from a cannon, at his ranch in Colorado.

These facts are not mysteries. 8)

Where is that at? If you live in LA its all over the place, or if you live in Houston, Dallas, New YOrk, Miami, etc.

that movie is playing at the arbor, junctional. have you seen it yet? maybe we could check it out.

for sure, man. lemme know when you resurface from MIA-hood. ;)

All right, I've read some reviews of this and wasn't expecting much. I've seen all of his documenteries, my favorites of course being the older one's of the early to late 70's where he was in his natural environment for the most part. The one he did for BBC was particularly good (youtube: gonzovision).

But, last night I saw the trailer to this and I must admit it seems like it could be promising. I know the trailers are always a hard way to gauge whether a movie is worth seeing or not, but I was blown away by this one.

Check it out here.

If anyone has seen this yet please let me know how it is, I'm going to see if it's available for download later on tonight.

check this out if you have the chance. if you know much about thompson's life and work it probably wont introduce anything new to you, but it is a well-done documentary featuring a lot of people who new hunter best.

Oscar® winning director Alex Gibney presents a probing look into the uncanny life of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson inventor of gonzo journalism and author of the landmark Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Accompanied by an iconic soundtrack, this fast moving, wildly entertaining film addresses the major touchstones in Thompson s life from his intense and ill fated relationship with the Hell s Angels to his deep involvement in Senator George McGovern s 1972 presidential election.

highly recommended. well worth watching. so much footage ive never seen before. what a fucking legend that guy was. living on the edge
