I went to urgent care yesterday bcs my toe is messed up,infected, and leaking fluids. Im on pecocets for my broken leg but this combined with it was making my life unbearable. Turns out they are going to need to take the nail of my toe cuz its so infected, and the doctor at urgent care told me im going to need an i.v. of antibiotics!
When i got to the e.r. soon, should i tell them my doctor has me on percocet? So they give it to me der?
Bcs the last time i went to the e.r. they treated me like a druggy, wouldnt give me anything, but they let me take the percs my fiance brought from.
My dr. Is on vacation and im almost out of my percs, he wont be back till tue, and ive been takn extra percs cuz my toe and broken leg together have been unbearable! Should i be honest? U think they might prescribe a little more for me? Even just hydrocodne till my dr is back and i can see him this tuesday? What r my rights at the e.r.?

Will they call my dr while hes on vacation? I need to get this procedure done.

I think you should tell them. I was on perc when I went to the ER with severe back pain. They didn't bat an eye. I was in excruciating pain, and they immediately put an iv in and gave me dilaudid. I ended up being admitted, and had back surgery two days later. Obviously, my situation is different than yours, but since you have legitimate, obvious pain, they should treat you respectfully. With your physical issues, they should not treat you as someone who is drug seeking, but I may be nieve. I will be interested to hear what others suggest.

not harm reduction..but honestly, i doubt i'd bring it up unless i were to receive some kind
of sedation or other meds at the er..then it would be important for the treating md to know..
to avoid interactions which would probably, at best, make you hurt more..
and at worst..you don't wanna go there. to err on the side of caution it would probably be best to
just avoid taking any meds before your procedure anyway.

some kind of pain script is probably pretty standard for the procedure.
if you're hurting, speak up. they're supposed to treat your pain.

So i told them and they wouldnt give me anything. It was 8 hours since my last percocet and i was due and they wouldnt give me a motrin. The dr wouldnt see the the p.a. did. The pa said he would give me tramadol, but the dr refused that too! Wtf? I was in tears' i even told them the truth. My dr is on vacation till tuesday, can u help me by giving me anything for pain? They said"if u in pain come back tomorrow." Wow.
I couldnt believe it.
Not even the non narcotic tramadol. Dont go to spotsylvannia e.r.

Damn I wish I would have seen this thread sooner, I would of told them nothing, the only thing I would have said was I'm in lots of pain could you please help me out. Damn sry bout your luck.

Most places(hospitals, doc office) have that drug monitoring program where they can see what you have filled for the entire year. If they(staff) ran you and see that you have just filled a script for opiates/opioids, they will not give you more. If you have a history over the last year that shows you have been seeing different docs, filling at different pharmacys they view that as shady and might refuse to give a script. Regardless of your pain if you got a script for Oxy a week or two ago and directions state take X amount at Y time they do the math and see you should have a bunch left they will not give more.

I'm not saying this is the case, but its something to ponder.

I am shocked. Part of why I suggested you be honest was because of what StartedHydro said. If you are getting mutiple scrips in multiple places that is a red flag. I am really sorry you are in pain and not getting the treatment that you deserve. I guess honesty is not always the best policy. :(

i'm not at all surprised, unfortunately.
md's are so very fallible, just like the rest of us.
if you're in pain tomorrow, go back tomorrow, op.
when I screw up at work, someone calls me on it.
not that I do..but if ever I did, they would.

I had to tell my surgeon that I had recreationally taken opiates in the past, and developed a tolerance. I only told him because I woke up 3 minutes after leaving the operating theatre (told me I should be unconscious for 4 hours...) in agony. The sedation was a fent/propofol combination and I'm pretty sure the fent didn't do a damned thing, but I KO'd by the Propofol. They, incredibly begrudgingly, fixed me up a 20mg I.V. Morphine shot which provided some analgesia, but I sure as hell wasn't gonna ask for more. Sent me home with co-codamol and paracetamol though... bastards.

Fuck that, ask to see the attending physician on duty. It's probably not a good idea to mention that you're out of compliance with the way your medication is scripted, just that your pain isn't being covered properly by what you're taking.

tramadol actually is a narcotic, it's just so weak most people who take opioids on the regular overlook due to it's vast limitations and severe risks of inducing seizures when used improperly by an uneducated addict or patient..... It's even now a scheduled controlled substance.

This thread has rapidly turned into a how-to-get-prescribed something thread, and these types of threads aren't allowed. Be honest with your doctors, depending on the surgery, it could mean the difference between a successful operation vs the anesthesiologist freaking out because they either can't control your pain with normal doses, or they did not factor in that you were taking CNS depressants already, something that they NEED to know when planning for surgery. Any surgery. This thread should be an example for all who question whether to be honest with the surgeons, because the huge risks outweigh any potential benefits.

Getting multiple scripts from multiple doctors, (aka Doctor Shopping) is, as someone pointed out, something that raises red flags, and it's better to be safe than sorry. That's the example we set here.

PM me with any further questions.
