Going to rehab

I applied for a rehab when I had a nasty habit of using 20mg diazepam and 2mg alprazolam daily and used three times a day OxyContin 20mg for pain management and recreationally 60mg extra on weekends crushed and potentiated with many means.

I also had a habit of abusing zolpidem. Each time I got a box of 30 they went in a few days.

This may not sound like much for many but I am becoming a father so I would like to be totally sober.

So because I could not go to rehab while going to school I have to wait until summer vacation starting on 31 of this month.

So there has been some time between my application and the rehab starting and I had dealt with most of the issues. I have quited benzos and stopped taking oxycodone recreationally.

So basicly I am wondering what I am doing on rehab. I think that I go there and try to figure out by therapy what are the reasons for my recreational usage and try to find other ways to deal with it.

Should that sound good for you people?

It is a month long rehab with no cellphones etc. or visitors allowed except in sessions with Dr discussing about treatment.

So does this sound like a waste of time or should I go there and try to get as much out of it as I can.

That is pretty accurate, the point of rehab is pretty much what you said exactly. It depends on your current situation. If you don't have a job or can afford not working for a month, if you don't have many things you should be responsible for during that time, than it can't hurt if drug use is or may soon be really having a negative effect on your life. I have been in and out of rehab myself, and each time I felt like even if I could not get completely sober and solve all of my problems, taking that time off of using and being healthy for a while would do me good in the long run. A break can save a daily users life if you think about the damage you are doing to yourself. I also will say that the amount you are using makes no difference. I have been into rehab for just hydrocodone and occasional oxy/morphine oral usage, but because of the negative impact it was having on my life and health and how bad I needed it to be sane it was worth it. Just weigh your personal options and decide if it will be worth the time in the short and long runs.

I went to a detox twice, it's a bit different from rehab. But while i was in there the only thing i could think of was getting out and scoring. The detox has a maximum of 7 days, which is really not enough. It's just a withdrawal stage and when you have past the main stage of withdrawals then you can choose to go to a rehab. Thats what it's like in Melbourne Australia anyway. Not sure exactly where you're from so it will most likely be different.

I have a mate who is currently in rehab (about a month in) and he's doing great. It's good that your doing something about your problems and not getting legally forced because you did something whilst on drugs. Get your problems fixed while you can! :)

Your attitude going into this seems perfect to me based on what you said here. If you are going to be a father, its important for you and your kid that you get this stuff sorted out and you should be proud that you're willing to take these necessary steps before the problem gets worse and the potential or real impact on your family grows.

I can't tell you based on what you've posted here if inpatient rehab is the best option for you - I'm not sure if you're in the US, but here we use the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria to evaluate what level of Care is appropriate given an individual's history. Have you been evaluated by an addictions professional and they recommended residential (inpatient) treatment for you?

I'm not trying to discourage you from going this route, I just want you to be confident that you're pursuing the best means of addressing this in your life. There are benefits and drawbacks to the different levels of care (basically Outpatient, Intensive Outpatient (IOP)/Partial hospitalization (PHP), Residential and Medically Managed Detox). With residential, its often necessary to get out of your normal environment, step back and look at everything but then without aftercare (that many don't pursue), it can be disastrous returning to that environment and all the problems and stressors that lead you to where you are.

Alternately, inpatient or IOP/PHP can allow you to stay in that environment and more gradually make the necessary changes but the relative lack of supervision and removal from the environment is insufficient for some people.

I'm studying addictions counseling so if I can help at all with what you're facing here, please feel free to private message me.

Yea, as said before rehab is to help build coping mechanisms other than using drugs. IMO month long programs don't work as well as more intensive facilities. But since you have a time constraint and seem serious about it could very well work in your favor.

Remember than no one can make you get sober, they can just give you the tools to get there.

One day at a time!

Thanks for the replies and compassion. Tomorrow is the day I am going to this rehab so only one night with you people for a month. I think I can succeed with my goal of staying away from benzos and recreational use of painkillers and eventually can ween off completely from oxycodone after my surgery. I hope that the month of rehab and six months of counselling after that will keep me sober and stay away from benzos too even if they would be prescribed for real issues.

I hope to see that one day I am virtually drug free exept the legit use of antipsychotics and occassional use ofvantidepressant for my bipolar. I have not been drunk too for long times. First of may was the last time I did alcohol to the point I was drunk. After that it has been one or two beers at business days and few glasses of red wine during weekends.

I just hope that I can quit smoking again too.

The only thing is that my now pregnant fiancee must be without me for that month.
