Location
wherever the wind blows me
One day
I will be
the hero of streetlights.
I will slip in and out
of shadows
and rescue city nights
from the silence and boredom
of heartless flowers
growing viciously
in sidewalk cracks.
I will save the pavement
from the slow death
of footsteps
that lead away
endlessly.
Streets will wear my name
as a badge
when I chase
out all the dull droning
of cars
that have never hugged a road
like my bare feet can.
I will scare
pigeons and rats
out of the holy alleys
that call me savior.
Tenements and skyscrapers
will sing
my song
in the whistling wind
as I stride
through the roads and empty lots.
One day
the lights will go out
when their champion
has died,
and given up the burden
of his electric flock
and shepherds
only his own wintry soul...
and the dawn is come.
I will return
again
and tell it all
to SAVE ITSELF...
and the power lines
will hum a new tune,
as night falls again.

It was motivated by a Paul Simon song and a friend of mine asking me about my views on the Christian religion. I just wanted to express that urban development is now the hallmark of our culture and shows our neglect for our spiritual selves.
