GMO(Genetically modified organism) discussion

all i can say is nature's earned my trust by keeping people alive and healthy for thousands of years. the engineers at monsanto have not earned that trust, and attempting to deceive the public into accepting them is definitely an indication that they realize their products are not capable of earning them that trust. i really do wonder if these monsanto engineers actually consume their own products.

interesting link rm-rf. it's a scary prospect for sure, and the proliferation of GMOs in latin america and canada in this past decade are borderline alarming.

although...

If the U.S. succeeds in this global GMO cover-up, the FDA could seize any products in the USA that make "non-GMO" claims.

this seems to be a pointless manoeuver, since the USDA requires all foods labeled organic to be GMO-free. Thus, "Certified Organic" is already the defacto "no-GMO" label. The "No-GMO" logo mostly represents knockoffs that can't meet the USDA's standards for "Organic" and are just attempting to capitalize on the anti-GMO sentiment while sustaining the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

oh, and

Additionally, the USA could file lawsuits through the World Trade Organization against any country that allows non-GMO labeling or claims on its products.

that's also a moot point since many EU countries are so vehemently opposed to GM produce that they're outright outlawed. they don't need such labels to begin with, such WTO sanctions would not affect them.

I worry about cross pollination. If we later learn that GMOs have some seriously negative effects, their won't be any way to avoid them. GMOs are a big deal out here in the bread basket of America.

It made a few people in your area very very rich to, money which found its way back to cancer research, bloke donated one million at least to a university there.

Give me heirlooms vegetables and seeds any day over hybrids.

So much more variety and you can use the seeds again! :)

Lol something about the look of heirloom tomato kinda scares me. :)
But I'm sure they are totally fine.

So, have read this thread and most of the links you all have posted (didn't view the hour long video [yet], and didn't read the Wiki on the seed vault [yet]). What is it that I can do? Besides put my money into products that *hopefully* aren't GM. What can I do?

Is there something I can go to school for to work in the field that is anti-Monsanto? I don't have a career goal atm, but this shit pisses me off and I've been told I should go into something I'm passionate about. (I'm passionate about food but no one wants to listen to Veganism and if I were to become a dietician, I refuse to push eggs/dairy on clients, but that's beside the point.)

We don't know the long-term effects of eating these GM foods. What can I do?

I'm sorry this is rather off topic, but something needs to be done.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO MONSANTO

if for some reason you support GMO industries, WATCH THIS DOCUMENTARY. Monsanto has been in cahoots with the Bushes since way back! This isnt about fear of some potential unforeseen disaster with GMO foods, this is about the freedom of food.

Monsanto wants to turn the human race into a giant consumption farm, to perpetuate the endless supply of GMO foods and endless supply of hungry poor. Monsanto believes that overpopulation isnt a problem, its a market. What will we do when there are no more plants left on this earth that dont have a Monsanto patented gene?

NOTE:

you cant do anything with consumer power to choose between GMO and non-GMO products. thats illegal. welcome to the corporate states of nwo.

wouldnt do you much good. 90% of the soybeans on earth are Monsanto roundup-ready GMO soy. Its estimated that 99% of the worlds canola contains Monsanto patents. Alfalfa and corn may disappear forever to be replaced with Monsanto's bastardizations of Nature.

Just ask any Mexican Maize farmer what he thinks of his 12,000 year old species of corn being contaminated with GMO corn.
