Global Drug Survey 2017 finds Aussies love hitting the bong more than any other country

MAKING a bong out of a plastic bottle and garden hose is more than just a favourite pastime, it turns out Aussies are more partial to hitting the billy than anyone else on the planet.
This is the finding of the world’s biggest annual drug survey, which had more than 115,000 participants from 50 countries, including 5,700 respondents from Australia.
The Global Drug Survey, conducted by an independent research company in London, provides the largest in-depth examination at how drug habits vary between regions.

Locally, more than 75 per cent of Aussies admitted to using illicit drugs at one point in their life, while 30 per cent confessed to indulging in illegal substances a month before the survey.
Legal drugs were included in the survey and alcohol topped the list for substance consumption in Australia with 92.0 per cent of us hitting the booze.
Interestingly, cannabis (48.1 per cent) and tobacco (31.9 per cent) were more popular than caffeinated energy drinks (28.9 per cent).

MDMA (21.4 per cent), cocaine (17.5 per cent) and LSD (12.1 per cent) also rated reasonably high, while second last on the list was methamphetamine (4.2 per cent).
While not the global leaders in cannibas use overall, we are just below the global average in terms of people who enjoy a wake and bake, with 9 per cent of people admitting to smoking a joint between five minutes to an hour after waking up.

While our neighbours in NZ prefer smoking straight weed, 45 per cent of Aussies said they prefer to spin their weed with tobacco.

One of the scarier findings is the fact six per cent of Aussies admitting to having injected drugs — the global average was only two per cent.

Due to our geographical dislocation from traditional dealing networks, cocaine is more expensive in Australia than anywhere else in the world with a gram costing $321 on average.
The cheapest coke in the world was unsurprisingly in Colombia, where it sells for $5.26 per gram.

In terms of psychedelics, magic mushrooms were found to be the safest drug in the world with just 0.2 per cent of users seeking emergency medical treatment — MDMA, LSD and cocaine showed results at least five times higher than this.
Of the 28,000 people who reported taking psilocybin hallucinogenic mushrooms globally, 81.7 per cent said they were chasing a “moderate psychedelic experience” and the “enhancement of environment and social interactions”.
The continued growth of the dark web lead to 8.2 per cent of Australians buying drugs from an online marketplace, with MDMA and cannabis the most popular.

“Cannabis remains the world’s most widely used ‘illicit’ drug,” the report said.

“Regulatory change in many countries and the development of new technologies to deliver cannabis in less harmful ways are an important accompaniment to this change and pave the way for new public health approaches to reducing the public health harms associated with its use.”

While drug use might be prevalent in society, it is always good to remember its not without its risks and should be used with caution.
