Hi

Not sure where to post this had a look at the relationship forum but all that was about was cuddles and best places to ejaculate lol so anyway I suffer with a little anxiety and depression so I went to the docs and after about a year of trying all types of antidepressants I decided to self medicate I take gababentin which is prescribed for genuine pain but I also take Valium and dhc which is non prescribed to help with anxiety but my girl is always snapping at me and getting her self worked up to the point of tears over my pill "abuse" but its not like I'm a zombie I take 15mgs of Valium throughout the day and just 1 30mg dhc pill but she goes on like I'm injecting smack every night I have a good job earning £25000 a year and keep her in designer clothes so its not like I'm depriving her of anything I get all the Valium and dhc for free anyway. The way I see it is I'm not hurting anyone by taking these small amounts of Valium and dhc but just helping myself thru. I'm on top of it and have been taking these amounts for ages so. Regardless of tolerance will not increase my dose .

My question is am I wrong to self medicate and if it is genuinely hurting her should I stop and just deal with the anxiety.sometimes I feel she just has a shit day and needs to vent so she'll screw at me over nothing or am I wrong and just thinking of myself? I just need a 2nd opinion really

Thanks

This probably belongs in the Relationship section of the forum, but I'm not a mod, so who cares, right?

As for your question. If she is genuinely upset about your use, you should consider stopping. Self-Medicating is never a particularly good thing to be doing. Besides, if you genuinely care for this girl, I'd think you would take her opinions and viewpoints seriously and take them into mind. She's unlikely to continue seeing you if you keep doing something against her wishes. I don't think its unreasonable of her to be concerned for your well being.

i dunno..
I don't do relationship advice...
that would be like me trying to give you directions to hell.

valium @ dhc are my bff's.

this'll prob. get moved.

good luck.
sorry...i'm full of unhelpfulness today.

I'd suggest consulting a psychiatrist and telling them about your self medication and why you feel the need to do it eg anxiety. The psych would then be able to prescribe what they feel is appropriate for you, might keep you as you are or something else. Either way, your gf would no longer have a reason to bitch at you cos you would be legitimately prescribed whatever medication.
But on the other hand, I've got 2 kids by different Dads and am happily single with a dog for company, so probably not a great person to take relationship advice from.

I have severe anxiety and I've tried this method but they refuse to prescribe me anything for it. I buy xanax and valium off the street for legitimate anxiety. I will admit, I do abuse them, but I always set some of each aside for legitimate usage. I get severe anxiety seemingly out of nowhere and get panic attacks that mimic heart attacks/strokes.

I even had one doctor suggest I should go to church instead of using meds and I had one just come out and say they dislike and prefer not to prescribe people my age (25) such meds because "I'd be on them for life and they have such addictive properties". However, every female I know who has even gone to the same doctors, gets xanax or valium with no fucking problem whatsoever. Talk about some bullshit.

what about telling them that you're being forced to buy your necessary medication off
the streets because you can't live like this anymore.
and no doctor will help you.

i was recently told that Jesus could cure my anxiety. But, I believe he's got more important stuff to do according to the papers.

ok..sorry no more Jesus talk...

hangs head in shame...

I tried church and left when they told me homosexuals are sinners and that being gay is a choice - one of my brothers is gay and I'm pretty sure he didn't 'choose' the shit he gets off homophobic idiots.
Try a different doctor, very different situation here in uk - most will medicate whilst working with u to apply coping strategies, and continue medication if mental health can't be controlled without.
And if you tell a doc you've been on benzos illegally they almost always IME prescribe you something legit.
Good luck.

Psychra...it's become increasingly clear to me over the last several years..
that the anxiety is just something ppl are unable to understand...
reason being..
it's illogical.
that's the problem.
it doesn't make rational sense.
your best bet if you love her..
is take her with you to the dr.
explain. be honest if this is legit for you..
and maybe hearing from a dr. will change her mind..
beyond that..
i'd be stupid to try to give relationship advice to you..
i'm just out of ideas.

good luck!

All this talk of Psychiatrists and Doctors is, in my person opinion, nonsense. Nobody needs a Psychiatrists. If a person goes to one, it's because they seek answers to a problem such as Anxiety, or Depression. What they fail to realize, is those answers can be found within. It's just nobody wants to take the time to pick their own brain. It's much easier to have somebody else do it.

With that being said, you need to talk to your girlfriend. From my viewpoint of this situation, she is the top priority. If you lose her, you'll spiral into an addiction because you've lost all reason not to use. Talk to her, find out if seeing a Psychiatrist for legitimate prescriptions will be an exception. Be prepared for a big no. You need to understand your use is not only affecting you, but her as well, and as I said in my previous post it's not unreasonable for her to be concerned about you.

My question to that would be...if this is real legitimate anxiety and depression...does that affect her?
Because if she loved him..in the way that I can imagine ppl loving each other...she wouldn't want him to
feel this everyday. Shouldn't she want him to feel better?
I'd be a hypocrite to say I don't self medicate..and I'm not saying she shouldn't be concerned about his self medicating...
I won't say that.
I agree that it's not unreasonable for her to be concerned about him..that's her job if she loves him....
But part of that concern should be routed towards his anxiety and depression..
Not only his self medicating...but what it is he's self medicating.

Beyond that...I don't see a therapist...i don't even see a dr. anymore..
unless you count er dr's during kidney stones...
however, to me, it's not nonsense at all.
IMO - Nonsense would be to never seek out answers.
or worse yet... to assume you know them all.

Some people are overwhelmed by situations that lead them to depression and anxiety. Some are fortunate enough to overcome there problems by themselves, others need help from doctors, psychiatrists etc.
They may not be emotionally strong enough to deal with or come to terms with the cause, they may not know the cause, there may be another mental illness causing these reactions or something else entirely.
The reaction some people get suffering from illness such as these is one of pull yourself together, don't be soft, or they may not want to look foolish asking for help or they find it difficult to open up, this can lead to self medicating (this can be done and not even realise that you're self medicating), become unwilling to go out and/or socialise, self harm and sometimes suicide attempts.
For years I self medicated without realising, attempted suicide several times(serious attempts one of which caused me liver and kidney failure), because I was afraid of seeking help, I thought I'd be locked away.
I finally accepted help, my diagnosis of bipolar, medication and a care worker to talk with.
If it wasn't for my GP, psychiatrist and care worker I would likely be dead, on the streets or in prison, I came very close to all 3 before accepting help.
You're one of the lucky ones that doesn't need this kind of help, but please don't assume that mental health professionals are not needed, as to some of us they are not only life savers, but enabling us to lead a more fulfilled life. I am not there yet, but thanks to my mental health team, I'm leading a much better quality of life than 2 yrs ago.

Therapists and doctors are VERY trained in what they do. They have done extensive learning and research. I'm not saying all therapists and doctors are ridiculously smart and know all the answers. But they can have a lot of knowledge that people who haven't been trained just don't have. They can give you different ways of looking at things. There is NOTHING wrong with therapists and doctors. One person doesn't know all the answers. If you have problems (anxiety, depression, etc.), it's good to find other ways to help yourself. If having someone more educated and more knowledgeable about those problems is the way to do it, then why not?

OP, she is obviously concerned about her. Make sure you don't get addicted. Talk to her about it. Maybe reduce the amount that you take?

did you ever consider that someone trained specifically for dealing with psychological issues may know something that you didn't know? Sometimes anxiety is so overwhelming it does not allow you to have any insight into what's happening. For me, i did have the answers inside me but i could not realize them and i learned a lot of important things in therapy anyway. It was extremely effective and useful for me and i had terrible anxiety before.

OP: your girlfriend is being overly dramatic. However if you refuse to help yourself or seek out alternative help (other than valium) then she may be considered reasonable. A benzo addiction will bring your anxiety to a whole new level. I think the problem is that she doesn't understand what's happening or why you are using drugs to cope; perhaps communicating with her would solve this issue.
