Nothing about that post was to do with Shamble's modding. Just that we all like our sleep when we can get it :D

If I remember correctly Shammy was a smod both times I modded Eadd....he smodded by stealth :sus: I know how busy you can be and still be invisible in the isles mopping up ;) Man, did my 2nd time not result in us all having a nervous breakdown in the SS 8) That was an epic experience :|

I've always been of the belief that the nursing profession is made up of a very unique (but diverse) cross-section of the community.
You guys have such demanding jobs - often physically, emotionally and mentally taxing; lots of you work insane circadian-rhythm-mangling shifts, deal with all manner of gore, bodily fluids, suffering, insanity, abuse, death and disease in your daily work life - and you're expected - obliged - to be healthy at work, or you can bugger off back home, bloody sicko!

Also, you guys are in charge of the Big Medicine Cabinet at The Hospital - and i hear that things only go missing from those things, uh, sometimes.
That's impressive in itself!

Seriously though, so much respect to nurses. Takes a special person to be able to do what you guys do.
And christ almighty, do some nurses party hard on top of having such a crazy job...

Take it easy, but i'm sure i'm sure you dont need any encouragement with your friends Val and N.Done there to tuck you in :)

I am taking it easy bro. Luckily i had a stash of meds left over from the last time i hurt my back. Endone is overkill for my level of illness but it sure as hell makes me feel better.
The S8 cabinet on my ward is never pilfered. Two RNs are required to open it. The pills or vials are counted when something is removed and everything is logged in the s8 drug book. Same goes for the s4's though we hardly use them on our ward.A complete stocktake is done at the end of every shift so its not possible to take a little extra. I have heard lots of stories of years gone by however when a lot of nurses were helping themselves to the s8's and s4's. Those times are long gone.
 
^ i guess i just chucked that in because a vial of something (not sure what - an strong opioid of some description) was recently drained - and replaced (with water) from some vial at the emergency dept my ladyfriend works in.
Nobody knows when it happened - it was just noticed that the seal was broken when it was eventually opened, and sent away to be tested - and shown i think to be water, or watered-down.
So now, yeah she has to get a 2nd RN to sign off on every med she handles - which is a lot in an inner-city ED.

I know most nurses don't steal drugs.
....although another mate of mine used to get me bottles of liquid clonaz as a thankyou for hooking him up with things.
But that was years ago, anyway.
Haha, i've heard anaesthetists are reputed to be massive druggies. They'd have all the good stuff too.
 
The rules in ED's may be different to the wards as they are under much more pressure time wise. I am sure stuff does get knocked off from places but its never happened to my knowledge on my ward. I think ten years ago things were a lot looser and the good drugs were not as tightly controlled.
I am lucky, i have a good relationship with my gp and a documented lower back ( L4L5) problem with MRI scans to back it up so i have no problem getting endones or the oxynorm 10 caps and valium when i need them. I have never had an opiate problem so i only ever take them when i am sick or my back is playing up. I do enjoy the high though. I am feeling nice and relaxed. Oxycodone is a bizaare opioid though. I find its quite stimulating on its own. I prefer to take it with valium ( only in small doses though...i am not nodding off or anything)
 
Oxy is indeed stimulating, as is expected from Thebaine based structures. Though Thebaine molests way too many receptors to be feasible as a medicine like Oxy.

Your full of knowledge Sprout. I dont know that much chemistry, just the basic stuff they taught me in my degree. I know i find the oxy quite stimulating as opposed to morphine which did exactly the opposite to me but that was iv in hospital. I quite like the oxy buzz with a little bit of valium.
 
Oxycodone's got an interesting history. I read years ago (and can't varify the accuracy of this...) in a biography of William Burroughs that oxycodone - then sold as Eukodol - was taken off the market because of the common side effect of "euphoria".
While i can't find any varification it was ever taken off the market - αctuallly, i think it is probably total bullshit (!) -!but i like the story anyway. Hahaha.

Opiates are a bit like cannabis in that different types can be sedating, others stimulating.
In a way that whole upper/downer dualism seems a bit simplistic. But oxy is definitely stimmish.
And other side-effects that be quite pleasant on occasion.

Edit - oh yeah, just saw sprout's post. Glad you add a little credibility to go along with my improvised, historically inaccurate ramblings ;)
 
I was sort of confused the first time I had general anaesthetic, they wouldn't give me sedation beforehand but damned if they didn't pump me full of morphine after, which I found kinda weird as the op would have only been a local, thirty mins and send you on your way thing if I hadn't freaked out at the idea of watching people cut my hand open and insisted they put me out. I found it really fucking hard to sleep that night despite that. Weirdly don't recall the morphine doing much bar mild pain relief and making me itch and throw up, is that what it does? Though I guess the doses in hospital are gonna be sub-recreational? I like me codeine but don't get more adventurous than that so not sure how it works
 
Morphine does make you itch and a lot of people vomit, especially when moving. Doses in hospital are kept as low as possible but ensuring that the pain is dealt with properly. So it really depends on the person and the level of pain what the dose is. Usually the dosages are started out low and titrated up ( unless its an emergency in which case higher doses may be given initially but that doesn't occur where i work..its more an ED thing ). Sometimes opiods dont work and ketamine infusions are given. The main thing is the pain is managed. If your in hospital and in pain let the nurses know. They will make sure the doctors and the pain management specialists are informed and something will be done. We dont like patients to be in pain.

I was reading an article a while back about a bit of a scandle in the Australian ambulance service where a couple of paramedics had been emptying the vials of fentanyl that they use (bucally) using it and replacing it with water. From what I remember they were peeling back the corner of the metal cap that goes over the rubber stopper on the end of the vial and inserting a needle to drajn the fentanyl. Replacing with water and rearranging the cap to make it look normal.

I've done a bit of checking an there is an piece on YouTube about it.

Stuff like that it pretty rare nowadays and the culprit is almost always caught but still it's pretty low... Especially for the poor bastard in agony with a broken leg when gets water instead of analgesia.
Also morphine always gave me insomnia. Oxycodone even more so.

Maybe that's what went missing from my gf's work...

Yes i remember that story about the fent too. I dont know the protocols paramedics follow with restricted medications but i imagine that it would be difficult to get away with. As i said before it would be basically impossible where i work. There are too many checks and balances and the area where the scheduled drugs are kept is also our main storeroom for all our general nursing gear and all our iv antibiotics as well so its a busy room. If you tried anything dodgy you would be caught pretty quickly.
