Sat on the back garden in the glorious sunshine sipping a cold beverage, albeit slightly miffed at the postal system not sending or delivering some items I've recently posted.

The total foreigner in me is in desperate need of advice from any of you British people - especially if you've ever applied for student loans

So I'm trying to apply for student loans for next year and they're asking me for my National Insurance Number. Now being the frenchie that I am, I've got absolutely no idea what the fuck that is, but what I do know is that I don't have one. Apparently when I applied for my loan last year they should've given me one but I'm sure they didn't. I asked a French friend of mine here about it and she said she had to apply for one a few months ago when she got a job, that it took weeks to schedule the interview and that she had problems cuz she didn't have enough papers to prove her identity cuz she hadn't brought her birth certificate etc. to England...obviously. Problem being that I'm only here for another 3 weeks or so and that during those 3 weeks I also have to find a new flat, study and pass exams, and find an internship + job for this summer. And my head's just about ready to implode.
Question being - does anyone know if I can just leave that section of the applicatin blank? Will my application still go through? / if not, is it really gonna take me weeks to get that number?

:\

An English friend in Singapore had a lot of trouble and red tape getting an NI number.

Didn't know non-English students could get student loan. As its paid/claimed back through work, through tax, which is traceable via the NI number, you're certainly going to need one.

Yeah you need one 100%.

If you have applied for a student loan
If you've applied for and have been awarded a student loan and you don't have a National Insurance number, the Student Loans Company will ensure that Jobcentre Plus arrange for you to get one. They may require you to attend an 'Evidence of identity' interview - see the later section 'What happens when you apply for a National Insurance number'.

Sounds like fun

NSFW:
What to expect at the 'Evidence of identity' interview
The interview will usually be one-to-one (unless, for example, you need an interpreter). You will be asked questions about why you need a National Insurance number, your background and circumstances.
You will also have to prove your identity. Bring as many 'identity documents' (originals, not photocopies) as you can to your interview. Examples of documents which count are:
valid passport (UK or foreign)
national identity card (UK or foreign)
residence permit or residence card including biometric immigration residency documents
full birth or adoption certificate
full marriage or civil partnership certificate
driving licence (UK or foreign)
If you don't have any of these - or other - identity documents you still must go to the interview. The information you are able to provide might be enough to prove your identity.
During the interview a National Insurance number application form will be completed and you will be asked to sign it.
What happens next?
If you were asked to provide additional information you will need to do this by the agreed date. Jobcentre Plus will write and let you know whether your application was successful and what your National Insurance number is.
Tell your employer your National Insurance number as soon as you know it. Do not share your National Insurance number with anyone who does not need it as this might help someone to steal your identity.
Keep the letter telling you what your National Insurance number is safe as it is a useful reminder of your number. However, the letter on its own cannot be used to prove your identity and you do not need it to apply for a job or before starting to work. It's the National Insurance number itself that's important.
If you would like written confirmation of your National Insurance number in Welsh telephone the HMRC Welsh Language Helpline on 0300 200 1900. Lines are open from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday.

Yeah the student loans are available to all EU students.

Oh God this is gonna be a nightmare...I saw that website Mendo but I got confused because it suggests I should have gotten one when I applied for the loan last year...and I didn't. So I don't understand why it's necessary this year.
I guess I'll just have to do this. Ugh. Anyway, cheers guys.

I got a National Insurance number no problem when I was in London, as a EU citizen, just had to queue for a couple of hours at the Job Centre in Whitechapel. You need to bring with you proof of address, like past utility bills and tenancy agreements and your national ID cards or passport.

Edit: just read the above posts, they must have changed things recently. When I got mine in 2007 all I had to do was going to the job center with my national ID card and proof of address. I also had papers from my employers as I'd just gotten hired, that's why I needed the NI in the first place. The whole thing took the morning. I received the card via mail a few weeks later.

I'm just surprised nobody has asked why you have a total foreigner in you Pagey. The tone in this place is uncharacteristically high of late.

NI CARD

It's like a right of passage thing or it was when i was 16 .

You get sent it & all of a sudden you think you are all grown up then you find out it's so the Govt. can make sure you pay Tax:\

^Yeah that sounds so much nicer and simpler but I don't think there's any way around the interview anymore :\

I don't know I have some friends who moved to the UK very recently and had no problem getting a NI and start working. I reckon that as long as you have your passport or national ID card and proof of residence you'll get the NI with no issues. Perhaps you'd have to do that interview but it would just be a formality as you're a EU citizen.

Yeah I think I've got the equivalent in France, we also thought we are all big and grown-up at the time...now that I don't have my parents to help me take care of this shit it's really just annoying though (welcome to the adult world Pagey)

Oh okay. Hm. Well I'll call them up tomorrow and hope I can get an interview really soon. I think I got unnecessarily freaked out when I saw that earlier just because of the sheer amount of stuff I've got to take care of atm. One thing at a time though.

Pagey don't worry about it it's an easy thing to do, just make sure you make photocopies of all the documents you need, make a folder and bring that with you so you don't have to go there multiple times. When I did it I remember I had to sit down at a desk and have a chat with the job centre employee, they asked me for proof of ID and proof of address, just to be sure I'd brought all documents I had, national ID card, passport, electricity bills, tenancy agreements, the whole lot.

They did make fill in a form and asked a few questions like how long I'd been in the country, stuff like that. They might ask you for a guarantor so have name, address and phone number of some UK citizen you know writtent down when you go there, if needed you might ask your tutor in uni. Matter of fact if you have any trouble with the NI ask for advice at uni, student services will definately help.
