haha, so true, my nephew can use a mouse since he was 3 to surf youtube for kids cartoons!

Yeah it's messed up. I think the internet must have a big impact on one's attention span in particular.

With that said, the internet has taught me a lot more than any formal education.
 
My daughter is 5 and myself and her mother try to limit ger time infront of a screen.. Unfortunately its also a necessary evil these days that they start at a fairly young age using various technologies, they fall behind their peers, the schools start kids using computers from the day they start school.. its just part of life now.. :\

That said, some parents are way to liberal with their bundle of joys and time infront of a screen.. it is certainly detrimental to kids and you can actually see poor development in the ones left to their own devices erm... on... devices :)

My kids are clearly happiest when running around in feilds/woods/parks/puddles... and that is where most weekends are spent.. Apart from those never ending birthday fuckin parties :! ;)

im not so sure... i think the ability to focus is learnt as well. for instance, its only when i have extra time or feel strssed that i actually waste time around the internet. when i direct my use towards practical goals (reseach, writing or something) i can be pretty restrained.

formal education can have its merits too, especially in the young. if i were to only study what i liked and how i liked it, i dont think i would have gotten very far. sometimes its good to ahve proper guidance and be obliged to learn stuff thats not immediatly rewarding or seemingly practical. organic chemistry for instance - you learn a lot in the begning until it all comes together. math is an important stepping stone in all science, and literature should be compulsory - if anything, sms speak and internet forums make the use of extended vocabulary redundant. which is a shame, as it seems to me like we are trying to paint the rainbow of emotion and experience in 8bit colors.

iPad if you're into Apple, Kindle Fire for the e-books; or if you have no stromng preference for a particular one, just get a generic Android tablet -- you can download and install both Kindle and ePub-compatible reading applications.

If you're planning on letting an unsupervised child use it, do not store your credit card number; entering it every time and removing it after every purchase will be by far and away preferrable to the alternative.

Wicked, always good to spend time properly in nature, some fond memories stick in my mind as a lil kid exploring my aunties farm with the dog, through fields, woods, old sheds
 
yeah for real. i love nature. something about it.

Like i love city-life and comforts of home, etc.

but being in nature is awesome, peaceful, and 're-charging'. it's natural. even though i have addictions to computers, etc.

Id love for her to have an iPad but they're so expensive. I've ipad 2. And I'd worry she'd some my content which is adult content ie E-mail print outs etc - i would not like a 5 y/o to read that stuff. But yet i'd have to use my apple ID for her to d/l apps n stuff. And id need to work out how to put parental lock on so that she cant access social media.

I really am disgusted that kids are allowed to access Facebook n what not n that parents let them but that debate is for another time lol

Well I don't feel I learned very much from formal education, especially after the age of about 12. By then I was just learning off useless information that I would never need.

Learn computers but in this day n age there's no choice. If I don't she'll be behind the other kids n that won't be fair on her. Most parents buy their kids tablets at round 3-4 I've tried to leave it as long as possible but if it helps, encourages her with reading it's all good.

I've also words n numbers printed all around the housen we do 30 minutes of writing each day after school

What do you mean they'll "be behind"? It's not as if these 5-year-olds are doing anything complicated online, are they? Mining bitcoins maybe?
