Pretty much, when i was growing up everybody was into rock, metal, hip hop

I never got into rock and still don't like it...I grew up on hiphop, techno, triphop, electronica, dnb, but I can appreciate any kind of music, i Listen to bach sometimes, I've been a gurner in a happy hardcore club and hard house clubs and all that, but at the end of the day, I still don't like rock and the culture surrrounding it.

Hiya folks - I hope your all having a great week and looking forward to the weekend.

I haven't been online since the banned or block list thing where I have zero idea what I was talking about :D - For those of you about at that time, I no longer have a black eye and my bf bruising has vanished :o.

Bring on the weekend :)

There's no such thing as homogenous 'rock', nor is there a single 'rock' culture. Moreover, how do you define 'rock'?

Then again I suppose a lot of people (myself included) wouldn't appreciate the differences between some of the electronic subgenres you listed, and would write it all off as disco. Though personally, I wouldn't think of criticising electronic music 'culture' because I'm willfully ignorant of it, and far too cool to ever want to delve any deeper than a few forgettable nights out.

I can understand being turned off by a certain sound though, absolutely.

Who says a jazz band
Can't play dance music
Who says a rock band
Can't play funky
Who says a funk band
Can't play rock ok
Were gonna rock n roll the crowd
Just watch them dance, watch them dance

LABELS ARE JUST LABELS

Even Classic rock tracks like Pink Floyd's Another Brick In The Wall and Comfortably Numb ? 8o

I'm the exact opposite to you musically, i never got into rap, hiphop or dnb. I like some trance electronica stuff but other than that its all kinds of rock - heavy, punk, 'adult orientated', alt rock/indie, folk rock, and also acoustic traditional folk and country stuff like Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash or more re-invented folk music like The Pogues or The Levellers. I like some good 'pop music' cheese every now and then too.

bob dylan and johnny cash and pink floyd all count as pop cheese in my book

*awaits huge argument*

Hey we debate here, no argue. ;)

If you like acid and you haven't heard Syd Barrett Pink Floyd on acid...you don't like acid. FACT.

I've always had a love of music - if someone tells me they don't listen to music, or don't like music... I'm like w-t-f mate? To be honest, I've had plenty of experiences of hearing music which have blown me away without using drugs... more so whilst I was growing up & being introduced to artists/genres but it still happens.
Yep, thisthisthis. And it really pains me when people say they hated electronic music until they heard it on mdma/etc.. I've always (well, since around the age of 10) loved the music, even sober.

i dont think ive ever liked a certain music genre just because of the drugs....

i have a particular dislike for "psychedelic" music. the one written with trippers in mind, a bit disorienting and more texture-y if thats even a word. obviously just made to freak people out rather than songcraft ...

i also dont care much for punk. probably because of the culture around it ... too much anger and spit

I agree. Most sixties 'psychedelic' music (particularly the British stuff) just makes you want to punch somebody when you're actually tripping. Not that it's bad music necessarily. It's just a little bit twee for the most part.

Anger and spit were not an intrinsic part of the original punk movement (I'm talking mid-seventies New York here rather than London in '76). That came later, once 'punk' was a mass-marketed, sanitised musical style. Which is why 99% of music which identifies itself as 'punk' is total rubbish.

The original punk movement was a lot more liberating and challenging, hence the fact that the majority of its originators had distanced themselves from it long before the spitting and violence became entrenched.

But yeah, I get what you mean. I don't like the 'punk' scene, but I love a lot of music that gets categorised as 'punk'.

I can guarantee when a lot people say they don't like "Trance" or "D&B" or "Dubstep", they've either not listened to the genre or have heard bad songs... I think there is a lot more mediocre & poor music in the electric genre. Maybe part of that comes down to personal tastes. Same goes for any genre though. People just have an idea of how it sounds in thier head & say "I don't like it".

To put it another way. How many times did your Mum offer you food growing up & you said "I don't like it" until one day you try it & it was amazing!

Actually, I've realised that I'm a massive hypocrite as I hated dubstep until I heard it on lsd. Oops.

Haha, I didn't hate it... but I didn't particularly like Dubstep until I started using drugs. I would agree that some songs were probably more appealing whilst using drugs than not...

It's quite rare to find anyone who likes all genres of music.

Me, me! :) ... I just like "good music" really.

Like whenever someone discounts Metal as people thrashing on guitars, I always like to highlight the musicality of bands like Metallica, or even SOAD.
