What language do you code in? I'm looking to do some courses myself.

Hey, we've all had the crying wank at least once in our lives.

I'm doing an intensive course, at the moment we're just doing Ruby to get an idea of the fundamentals but afterwords we'll be doing java, android, javascript, advanced css (we already did html in the coursework), and rails. It's a pretty decent course though - it's a non-for-profit organisation that gets funded by employer partners, and assuming you don't seriously fuck up along the way there's basically a 100% success rate of getting a job as a junior developer within 6 weeks of the course if you want it.

I bought one of those ruby pii 3s earlier in the year and started having a look at python and sonic pii (a music based language - worth looking up on youtube if you're sufficiently nerdy like me), but really I was as close to a beginner as you could be when I started the course..... hence I'm keen not to become the dunce that failed to do the weekend assignment. I managed the first 2 mostly because I did them in Fridays class and basically copied answers, but this one you have to do a programme from scratch :S

It's kinda like, I follow what is being taught in class no bother - but then when I actually have to do something from scratch I have no idea where to start.... the thing I'm working on now is I have to make a booking app for the CodeClanCaraokebar (named such because the instructor didn't want it to be abbreviated to KKK lol). Gotta have 3 different interrelating "classes" - guests, room, songs, - a spec file for each (basically tests all your functions give the results they should), and a runner file (which is basically the user interface, run in the terminal/command prompt if your on windows). Then the program has to be able to book guests in and out of rooms, select songs and feed them to the correct room.....

...... and that's just the "mandatory" bit, ideally it should also have a means of dealing with the cashflow and a bar. I'll just be happy if I have something relevant to show, but there are some brainy cunts with tech backgrounds that will no doubt show up with different genre themed rooms and all sorts.

^^^^^^^^^^that sounded like I was having a total moan there, but I actually really like the course, best thing I've done in years and I've progressed shit loads in two weeks.

I'm clearly still slightly spun as I went a bit off topic - I'd recommend starting with Ruby if you're looking to give it a try. It's ideal because it is closer to english than a lot of other languages and quite user friendly (some languages will have a hissy fit at you if you put a space before a bracket or some pish, whereas ruby is like "its cool man, I know what you mean "

With ruby you can just be like

puts "hello world"
end

Whereas with something like java, you've gotta be like

{|x}] helloworld}{|.
]}:
'

(not actually that obvs, I don't know any java, but you get the idea...)

I could be totally wrong, but as far as I'm aware there are only 2 courses of its type in the UK - one in London, which is absolutely extortionate, and the one I'm at in Edinburgh, which is still pretty pricey. Basically they both cost £9,000, but the Edinburgh one deducts £5,000 as it gets that money from the sponsored employers.

Cool man, I've done some javascript / python courses before, never looked at Ruby or android, but was considering some SWIFT for iOS stuff. The last python course I did just got pointless after a while cause all the answers were available online...felt like I wasn't learning anything when the solutions were so readily available. I'm a musician so I'll definitely have a look at that sonic pii.

I've dabbled in some C++ / Java but never that deeply. Always find it hard which language to start with. Leaning towards Python/Ruby now.

lol that's what happens when I answer your one or two straightforward questions with an epic monologue. If Edinburgh or London aren't feasible for you, I'd imagine there are college/university run short term courses you could probably find. A word of warning there though - there are a couple of folk in my course that come from a computer science background at uni or whatever and basically said its pish..... the lecturer will show one way of doing things, you'll get a couple of practical excercises and the rest is essays.

Cant speak for London, Edinburgh offers SQA level 9 equivelent of first/second year uni... But that's optional. The real benefit is that they work with employer partners, who are aware the course is aimed specifically at preparing you for a junior development position. The organisation does share some info such as attendance records and homework submission, but they don't go into detail. They also help with CVs later in the course, and some companies come and do presentations/network. The course is well known in scotland/britain, and tech companies basically see completing the course as sufficient qualification.

In Scotland starting salaries for a junior developer are about 24k, dunno if that changes down south

Just another point on that, while its certainly possible to self-teach yourself coding online, there is more to the course than that. Most tech companies have a focus on an agile approach to work (i.e. collaborating on a large project as part of a team), and this is something that is more difficult to showcase to an employer if you are entirely self taught. Can't speak for other courses, but with us there is an emphasis on working in your "cohort" as a team player, and there are plenty of days where you'll simply be split into pairs/groups and left to design something. They also make sure to teach you not only how to write code that works, but code that is well-written - in other words, code that meets conventions and is arranged in a way that is easy for someone else to read and understand what is going on.

Meh, I could easily have committed atrocities today had I taken my gun. Chav central (Towyn, N.Wales) was fuckin chocker with chavs! I spent 70 quid on fuck all, got covered in slimey grey mud from what passes as the 'beach', cut my feet on the rocks, had to help some guy with learning difficulties who'd got stuck in the mud up to his knees - ruining my boots in the process, then got stuck in a 2 hour traffic jam on the way back because some inconsiderate bastards had decided to cause a 3 car smash on the A51! Highlights of the day were playing pool in the pub with my 11 year old son for the very first time, then throwing jellyfish at him later on...

I'm also quite amused with the crab walk and big heed, small legs carry on in the loo 8( If you can move :D Mxe, for me anyhoo, you can move about "waking tripping" and do some pretty cool yoga moves up against the door frames As long as someone can help untangle you afterwards lol... Music appreciation is top class too.
