AIRPLANE AIR FRESHENER?
Recently, ODV attended the Alabama Narcotics Officers Association and was introduced to a very disturbing revelation by Cpl. Keith Kelley (President of A.N.O.A.). Keith was playing with an airplane air freshener purchased from PEP Boys. This air freshener was equipped with a LED sensor powered by a lithium battery. The intended purpose of the device is for individuals who are driving with the music very loud to be notified by the red LED flashing when a cell phone is activated within 1 meter of the device.
The disturbing part of this revelation is that many of your radio transmitters (body wires) work off the same frequencies. Potentially, you could have an Officer or CI enter a vehicle or premises with a body wire and if that dealer was equipped with one of these devices could be immediately alerted to the body wire.
Not all wires will activate the device and not all telephones will activate the device. However, to be safe you may want to purchase a device from your local PEP Boys and run a trial on the various wires in the office. The devices are located in the air freshener section of PEP Boys and are called: AIRPLANE AIR FRESHENER #H048SM (Flashing LED lights rotary propeller).
This is not meant as an alarmist notification but merely to make you aware of a potential serious hazard to your Officers. If you are aware of other such dangers available, we encourage you to contact us so we can notify other Narcotics Officers through our Product News.
