Getting Shitfaced Healthily?!

I'm a pretty heavy drinker, but I also try to maintain an otherwise healthy lifestyle. I've recently started researching supplements that can reduce the damage alcohol does to the body so that I can continue drinking heavily on the weekends without feeling as guilty about it. I've found two especially interesting supplements so far:

Dihydromyricetin - This is an extract of a tree that only grows in Asia, and apparently it has been used as a hangover cure / sober pill there for awhile. I started taking this between sleep and my last drink, and it has been a godsend for preventing hangovers, but it apparently also helps reduce the strain that alcohol puts on the liver.

Glutathione - Supposedly one of the most potent antioxidants around, this is made in the liver but rapidly depleted by factors such as poor diet, and you guessed it, alcohol abuse.

B-Vitamins - Alcohol quickly depletes the body's reserves of vitamin b, and many symptoms associated with chronic alcoholics are caused by vitamin b deficiencies. I started taking vitamin b supplements after a particularly long bender and they had a very beneficial effect on my recovery.

What do you guys think? Anyone else take supplements to lower alcohol's heath impact on their bodies?

I used to be a heavy drinker up to last year until I took way too much mdma and still on a very bad comedown. I take multivitamins, vitamin c omega and so on to restore my health and to be as healthy as possible. I am not sure if you are taking other drugs as well but mdma and alcohol is a very bad combo. Imo, drinking heavily even on weekends might still have bad consequences in the long run, and I am not talking about just what I have read from books or online or what have happened to me, but a relative close to mine passed away from cirrhosis of the liver and he was also a heavy weekend drinker who also took supplements and tried to take care of his body. So please be careful and you are probably young too, but we cannot be young forever and need to take care of our bodies as much as we can. I thought I was going to be invincible but I abused my body and am paying the price.

/\ exactly. Nothing like that will repair the liver but the Vitamin B replacement is beneficial as far as feeling bad. It is depleted from drinking and yes, symptoms, including hangovers are due to needing these B vitamins replaced. I believe vitamins A and E are depleted also.

Liver4Rescue.

Also, I flavor my own vodka with blackberries, blueberries, and rasberries. AND, I make blended vodka drinks with fresh fruits and green tea.

At the very least, don't stop drinking water. I'm a fairly heavy drinker myself and before, during, and after a night of drinking I chug water like crazy - at least 120-150 oz throughout the day. This is mainly why I prefer liquor over beer for getting shitfaced - it's much more difficult to drink a bunch of water while drinking a bunch of beer. My poor bladder can't handle it. I also take a multi-vitamin with a glass a cranberry juice before I start with the booze.

Also, when it comes time to eat, eat something healthy. I like to much on a mix of honey-flavored granola and cranberries - good for the munchies and good for the body!

Hepato-protectives like milk thistle can help, but it's going to be hard to lessen the impact of alcohol being broken down to acetylaldehyde and acetic acid in the body. The vast majority of alcohol ends up turning to vinegar in the body, with only a small percent being excreted in the urine or through the lungs when you breathe. Making your body that acidic, even for a short time, depletes a lot of resources in the blood, and it's very dehydrating (vinegar is astringent). Acidic environments are not conducive to the most healthy enzymatic reactions, oxygen metabolism, and the prevention of the growth of pathogens.

IMO it doesn't matter what prevention you take, if you're getting "shit faced" then your body will have to deal with the toxic load. Every once in a while is probably not going to harm you that much but if you're a regular drinker then the impact can't really be prevented. Consider what you put into your body, by volume. Having many beers is not going to be offset by a few tiny pills; and if you're drinking daily, then those supplements will not even have a chance to integrate into the liver tissues before the alcohol comes in and strips all the nutrients away.

Also... drinkers often have weak stomachs. Alcohol washes away the fatty, protective lining which in turn hinders absorption. Don't assume that oral supplements are even being fully absorbed. The more you drink, the less bioavailable nutrition becomes.

Great post, I believe this covers the fundamental points that are often overlooked.

Now for one of my favorite info graphics

I believe small is any amount that doesn't produce side-effects. A pint would be small for me, but after a second pint I'll be feeling funny after the fun wears off.

Surprised nobody mentioned omega 3s (that I saw). I have read that alcohol use can rapidly deplete the body's stores of these fatty acids, like DHA.

I never thought of drinking water while having liquor. Usually I drink beer, stop, and then drink water for the rest of the evening.

My system can't handle heavy drinking at all. Anything past a little buzz and I feel crappy when it wears off and feel sick the next day. Water helps make it more bearable than dehydrated+sick.

Still may incorporate that tip when drinking liquor once in a while.

Nice Pretty diamonds. I always thought that just water would work to help diltute the alc in my system and then not hit my liver so hard

Water is always good since alcohol dehydrates you. I try to drink a glass of water or green tea (if I'm out drinking) every 2 alcoholic drinks. They say you should drink a glass of water for EACH alcoholic drink but that's too much liquid for me. I found that doing my homemade juices, mixers, and soaks doesn't give me a hangover at all without having to pound water all night~! Hangovers are also caused by all those extra sugars in the sodas, juices, etc.

thujone, thanks for the info graphic... that's handy. I do question though if small amounts are even good for some people. I'm very sensitive to alcohol and the negative effects increase exponentially with each sip.

I question if alcohol can be called a panacea or prophylactic.

Hola HL! Being a former everyday drug user with a once-fucked liver, I would recommend spacing your debauchery out. We choose our poisons, right? As they say, the poison is in the portion, and if you're doing it everyday, there's no way around the necessity of reduction.

Before a night of heavy partying, I try to stick to raw juices and salads. I also take a glass of water for every shot. If I'm taking MDMA, I try to take it early in the night so that I can still have some hours of sleep. I also have coconut water for electrolite shizz.

If I drink beer, I try to take unpasteurized beer. I dunno, this makes me feel so much better than regular beer, while still getting me plastered.
