Ive been on about 100mg of tramadol a day for the past 5 months now. Ive been using it cuz it is very available and otc in the country im in and as an ex heroin addict i have trouble remaining completely sober. The thing is im going back to the US in about a month. The news of my return was unexpected and now im needing to get off it cuz one of my worst nightmares is withdrawals on an airplane. Anyway, how bad could these withdrawals be? Could i get seizures or serotonin syndrome on this dose?

I just thought of sumthin also...im currently in a pretty unregulated country when it comes to pharms so i can easily obtain codeine and hydrocodone otc...thats pretty much the only thing ill miss when i go back to the overly regulated US...Anyway, since tramadol is a different type of opiate could i ease through the withdrawals with some codeine or hydros? Like man out till the 36hr mark and then bust out a hydro dose to smooth out the ride or will that just delay w/d?

Hey CapNorco47 - I aueried the net and found some info for you. I think you should start tapering off them ASAP as they are controlled in the US so I don't think you'll be able to bring them into the country without a note from the doctor. I found the following and thought I would post it for you, I will include the link after.

Tramadol is associated with the development of physical dependence and a severe withdrawal. In both humans and animals. Tramadol causes typical opiate-like withdrawal symptoms as well as atypical withdrawal symptoms including seizures. The atypical withdrawal symptoms are probably related to tramadol's effect on serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake. Symptoms may include those of SSRI discontinuation syndrome, such as anxiety, depression, anguish, severe mood swings, aggressiveness, brain "zaps", electric-shock-like sensations throughout the body, paresthesias, sweating, palpitations, restless legs syndrome, sneezing, insomnia, tremors, and headache among others. In most cases, tramadol withdrawal will set in 12–20 hours after the last dose, but this can vary. Tramadol withdrawal lasts longer than that of other opioids; seven days or more of acute withdrawal symptoms can occur as opposed to typically three or four days for other codeine analogues.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

I am doing the exact thing you're asking about. I didn't man up. I have been taking them since my last tram. I have had hardly any WD symptoms so far. I feel the anxiety between doses of the oxy. I am only on my 6th day but I am free of trams. I am planning to keep on the oxy 5 mg x 3 times a day for 12 days. Then I am going to drop 5mgs every 3 days. I will have two days off of work and then take my chances with oxy WD's. I am trying to ensure I am out of the woods for trams before discontinuing the oxy. Hope everything worked out for you. I'll post what happens w me when I drop down and then when I discontinue oxy.

I will also only be at 15mg of oxy for roughly two weeks... I've never gone through Wd's off oxy but I have been prescribed them for a week or so and no issues when I ran out
