Germany to ban Red Bull Cola after traces of cocaine found

Germany is considering a nationwide ban on the high-energy drink Red Bull Cola after traces of cocaine were found in it.

Authorities in the states of Hesse and North-Rhine Westphalia have ordered retailers to stop selling the beverage.

The consumer ministries in the two states confirmed they had ordered retailers to pull the drink off their shelves after a food safety institute in North-Rhine Westphalia found the drug in samples.

"The institute examined Red Bull Cola in an elaborate chemical process and found traces of cocaine," said Bernhard Kuehnle, head of the food safety department at the federal ministry for consumer protection.

Authorities said the cocaine levels did not pose a health threat but were not permitted in foodstuffs.

The investigation found the drink to contain a non-cocaine extract of coca leaf in the drink.

That means the drink cannot be classified as a foodstuff but as a narcotic and needs a special license, authorities said.

Rewe, the German retail group, had already issued orders to remove the fizzy drink from its shops. Wilhelm Deitermann, a spokesman for the North-Rhine Westphalia consumer ministry, said he expected most "if not all – other German states to follow suit and ban the drink".

Red Bull Cola has protested the action. "De-cocainized (sic) extract of coca leaf is used worldwide in foods as a natural flavouring," said a spokesman.

The company added that Red Bull Cola as well as other food that contains coca leaf extract is considered safe in the EU as well as in the US.

The more popular Red Bull, dubbed the "clubbers' drink," is often mixed with vodka. It contains caffeine, vitamins, and sugar which, the company claims, kick-starts the body's metabolism and keeps people alert.

hope this isn't a repost, either or... wtf?

So, how about testing Coca-Cola? I'm sure that they would NEVER have minute amounts of coke in their coke;)

Yeah, I seriously doubt that if you were to look at coca cola you'd find minute traces of cocaine as well, probably in the ppm to ppb range, but still measurable.

Unlikely this was intentional imho, the amount wouldn't have an effect and what would be the point in risking having your drink banned and possibly facing a big ass fine. There is no reason to even ban this, "Oh but it contains cocaine, it MUST be banned" the idiots say, it is like if there isn't enough to do anything at all whats the difference, why did they even test it for coke? lol.

I think its already been proven that modern Coca-Cola contains very low trace amounts of Cocaine. Someone should text the Germans..
Plus Spain showed that Barcalona has trace amounts of Cocaine in the air. Whats next, travel restrictions?

^
Don't forget the trace amounts of various drugs, illicit and licit, that was detected in the water supply of various cities. I'm off to drink gallons of tap water and lick a few hundred dollar bills. :D

Make sure you don't go to Singapore directly after licking money, drinking that contaminated tapwater, or breathing in Barcelona. If for some reason you do go to Singapore after unknowingly consuming drugs in another country to the degree that you can test positive at the hospital, should you have to go, they can charge you with unauthorized consumption even if you can prove that the consumption happened in another country.

Hopefully there will be some numbers forthcoming regarding what exactly they found in this drink. Research suggests Coca Cola used spent coca leaves very recently. I know the coke formula varies by country. Did Red Bull Cola just not comply with German regulatory guidelines?

All I know is, "what is De-cocainized extract of coca leaf" that sounds like some politically correct word to dissuade people from the actual contents.

Yeah, I'm releasing my own drink soon; it's about to hit the market. It's called, "Euphoria". Its contains trace amounts of de-psilocybinized extract of P. Cubensis mushrooms 8)

I'm sure I'll have no problem getting it on the market...

There's German company called Fritz Kola that just put out an ad about a week or two ago for their high-caffeine-energy-cola-drink that says "Doing coke is so eighties".

I saw this article and then saw the ad again last night, and thought, damn, that ad exec must be jumping up and down with joy at the moment! You can't pay for stuff like that!

... after a food safety institute in North-Rhine Westphalia found the drug in samples

I wonder if the local soft drink companies like Fritz Cola have any connection with that food safety institute? Maybe they just want to eliminate the competition for their own energy drinks.

Now we have to ban all colas flavored with natural coca extract. Next, we need to ban a slew a baked goods that contain poppy seeds. We've already started effectively banning OTC medication that works and replacing it with bunk garbage. Can anyone say pseudoephedrine being replaced with phenylephrine?

Coca leaf extract is an extremely common and perfectly acceptable and legal food additive/flavorant. Of course, it is decocainated first. But, just like decaffination, there are always minuscule amounts left over.

Hey guys! I'm gonna totally get coked up on red bull! All I have to do is drink 200 cans!

if it was in the ppm range we'd be getting high on it. 50ppm = 50 mg per litre = 100 mg of pure coke in 2 litres, we'd get high as fuck if there was that much coke in coke. It'd be in the ppb to ppt range I'd say.

Paranoid. I bet you go for all the conspiracy theories.
