German dealers 'add lead to marijuana'

Drug dealers looking for extra profits apparently added lead flakes to packets of marijuana, inflating their value while causing dozens of cases of serious poisoning, doctors in Germany reported today.

The lead made up, on average, 10 per cent of the material in the marijuana packets, boosting profits by about $US1,500 ($A1,613) per kilogram, Franzika Busse of University Hospital Leipzig reported.

"One package contained obvious lead particles; this strongly indicated that the lead was deliberately added to the package rather than inadvertently incorporated into the marijuana plants from contaminated soil," the researchers wrote in a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine.

The problem was discovered last year when the first of 29 patients, aged 16 to 33, started showing up in four Leipzig hospitals with abdominal cramps, fatigue, nausea and varying degrees of anemia. One was ill enough to be suffering from hallucinations.

It took eight weeks to uncover a common pattern: all were young, smoked, had body piercings and were either students or unemployed. All regularly used marijuana.

Three patients brought in their stashes. All samples tested positive for lead contamination, with one having lead flakes that were obvious under a microscope.

After two more weeks, an anonymous screening program for marijuana users uncovered 95 other people who needed treatment.

Busse's colleague, Dr Michael Stumvoll, said in an email that about 200 people had now been identified. The screening was continuing, he said, although it did not appear that the practice was continuing among dealers.

"The medical community, including pediatricians, should consider adulterated marijuana as a potential source of lead intoxication," the German team wrote.

Ummm, so you're saying the motivating factor is their location(East Germany)?

Get a grip, most drugs are produced(and sold) in much poorer and more dismal places and this isn't common. Also, drugs getting cut with fucked up things is common everywhere...


The only motivating factor I suspect is greed. :\
 
i've heard from other sources that the some of the weed in middle europe is contaminated with lead because of using cheap fertilizer contaminated with lead. this is the first time i hear about lead flakes. still disturbing…
legalize drugs, so that something like that won't happen again! :\

No I wasnt trying to say that, just that I've been to Leipzig for extended periods of time having lived in and been born in germany(mostly in Augsburg, bavaria). I found the population to be pretty bleak, and I witnissed acts of disregard for human life on a few occasions while traveling in drug circles there. Greed certainly, but I was just reminded of the time I spent there and the impression it left on me. There is a heavy eastern european crime presence there, seriously rough shit. Also lots of skin head presence. And the beer their is not good. But I dunno I went during the mid 90s during fall and winter usually. I've heard it's a fun place, in some places. The put juice in their beer because it's so bitter.

it boggles the mind how stupid some people can be fuck. if your gonna be a cheapscate and cut your weed at least use oregno or some other kind of herb spray it down with sprite to make it heavier or better yet just sell chinced bud. or how about quality product its weed for fuck sakes. this kinda shit never happens where i live and at the worst the buds are chinced or have lots of stems and seeds. if some one ever puts lead in my bud im gonna hunt them down and give them a couple of good boots.

something like this would lead me to belive theres some kind of malicous intentions behind this
 
^yea thats what im thinking. i mean everyone knows lead is toxic...ppl have known this for decades. there are a ton of other things they could have used to add weight to their product...what happened to the days of putting a few BB"s in a bag to make it weigh heavier...least they would fall out eventually.
 
Because its easy to catch.

If I caught anybody selling me a bag weighted with lead, they would be getting a big slug of 238U in the back of the head, curiously shaped like the interior of a large caliber coilgun:P

You never know, not saying something exactly like this happened to you or in your neighborhood, but you never know what cuts are used.
 
with weed, you really do know what cuts are used. I haven't gotten a chance to look at this weed, but it should be apparent in the taste. One hit won't kill you or seriously hurt you, and if you realize that this is a potential concern, you can stop yourself easily enough.

water is the only real cut that works for weed. Probably the most common as well.

Is the UK still getting weed laced with silica glass? This is much worse though, lead is terrible and will fuck you up for life.
