German brewers demand moratorium on fracking to protect the purity of their beer

"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
The Association of German Breweries sent a letter this week to German Prime Minister Angela Merkel and six Cabinet Ministers demanding a moratorium on fracking until more research can be carried out to allay concerns of water contamination.

Germans have had strict standards for beer brewing since the 1516 implementation of the Bavarian “Reinheitsgebot,” or purity law, which allowed only malted barley, hops and water to be used in the brewing of beer. (Yeast was allowed later, after it was discovered.) But the strict nature of the law, which remains in effect today, means that no additives of any kind are allowed — especially contaminants in the drinking water.

The breweries association spokeperson, Marc-Oliver Huhnholz, told Bloomberg, “We are concerned that fracking endangers the brewing water that more than half of Germany’s breweries take from private wells.” He explained to The Telegraph, “The water has to be pure and more than half Germany’s brewers have their own wells which are situated outside areas that could be protected under the government’s current planned legislation on fracking.”

I love it. As an American who has never been to Europe I got to say I'm jealous. Our environmentalist spokesman are notoriously boring as shit (al gore). Meanwhile in Germany they got beer brewers leading the crusade. Brilliant! I don't give two shits about water fowl but if my beer starts tasting funny I'm going to go out and change the world! This is a good way to appeal to the masses and convince them to do the right thing.

What does fracking have to do with birds? You actually need a "hook "when it comes to protecting your drinking water? Like some football player to make a PSA or something? I don't know how it can be dumbed down any more. Simplistic cartoons maybe? I forget you people have the attention spat of a flea and if it isn't interesting you tune out.

Maybe I'm mixing phracking with one of the other environmentalist causes. Whatever I don't give two shits about the environment.

Fuck fracking. Seriously. Click this link and learn about it if you have no idea what it is.

According to the United States Department of Energy, hydraulic fracturing fluid is composed of approximately 95% water, 4.5% sand and .05% different chemicals. There can be up to 65 chemicals and often include benzyne, glycol-ethers, toluene, ethanol and nonphenols.[172] Many chemicals used in fracking, such as 2-BE ethylene glycol, are carcenogenic. This chemical is listend under chronic oral RFD assessment, chronic inhalation RFC assessment, and carcinogenicity assessment records of the US environmental protection agency’s website. In a study done by the US environmental protection agency, it found statistically significant effects observed in mice included forestomach ulcers and epithelial hyperplasia, hematopoietic cell proliferation and hemosiderin pigmentation in the spleen, Kupffer cell pigmentation in the livers, and bone marrow hyperplasia (in males only, suggesting tissue damage due to exposure above 125-250ppm.[173] The study also found statistically significant decreases in automated and manual hematocrit (Hct) values, hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations, and red blood cell (RBC) for both males and females at exposure of 250ppm and for female in the 125ppm exposure group.[173]

I would like to find out who thought this was a good idea and put them in a steel cage. Not jail, but just a steel cage, that is being suspended in the middle of a city like New York City, that way everyone can throw stuff at them and curse at them.

Fracking is pure evil. The people who thought of this just want to buy a fifth or sixth expensive property/house/car. These are soulless people who don't mind hurting the entire ecosystem just for gaining a little more profit.

Good post, go German brewers go!!!

I don't understand how Germans are anti nuclear power but pro fracking.

This shows that the brewers are trying to push a moratorium on it.

It's not so much that the German government has put its stamp of approval on it (if they have please enlighten me with a source).... it's just that there are very rich oil companies which want to get in on the profit while the profit is still in the ground. Until we have tapped the earth dry of oil, these companies will continue doing what they're doing, even though the profit margin is diminished with fracking, and best of yet, when it's completely gone for good one day, they'll just move onto the next best thing they can extinct out of the earth's resources.

I wish people would wise up to what's going on and choose not to consume gasoline whatsoever TBPH; but I don't look down on car owners; it's hard not to own one where I live and where I used to live. I'm just incredibly thankful to never spend another penny of what I earn on gasoline. And the amount of damage contributed by one car per person per year is like, probably 0.000000001% or less of the direct damage the oils companies do to the earth just to get you that gasoline in the first place. I might be exaggerating or shockingly overestimating by that number, but you get the idea. You're just a brick in the wall.
