Gems of paraphernalia

I was wondering what people have to show for when it comes to unusual paraphernalia, that's not easily obtainable or never has been commercially available, maybe even self-built.

I recently fixed my old scale, a Mettler B5 that was manufactured in 1947. It has a more than sufficient precision of +-30ug, weighs up to 200g and the best part is: I only paid 30 bucks for it a couple of years ago!

While I sat there fixing and calibrating the thing (manually, no tools required) I realized how much I'm in love with it and how much the inside fascinates me. I wondered if there are any other peculiar folks like me out there with pieces of paraphernalia that you don't get to see every day.

I could go on rambling about the beauty of this, but I'll just wait and see if anyone has similar stuff laying around. Here's a pic of the beauty, not my own though:

Greetings

I too have recently bought one of these interesting scales and I was wondering whether you knew how one zeros it with a weighing boat on - or does one measure the weight of the boat, then the sample and subtract the two? Instructions can be found at users.ugent.be/~mvervust/MettlerB5.pdf but one moment they are talking just about the weighing boat and then boat + contents and something seems to be missing. Can you help?

Kind regards
Ian

Of course I can, probably best to send me a pm with a messenger address though. You should get a spirit level first though in case the surface it stands on isn't exactly horizontal. It's necessary to adjust the height of the feet to level it out. The process itself is relatively simple and I'll happily guide you through it. May I ask what you paid for the thing? It's lovely isn't it? :D

Oh, btw if you have the same weighing boat as me, it weighs 20g and you simply turn the lower left knob to 20. I doubt you'll be within 10mg of zero though with that being the only measure you're taking. You might have to open it up and put some weights back in place, adjust the as mentioned before, turn the prisms a little etc.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will bring my scale to the office tomorrow and hopefully we can have some fun setting it up. Maybe we can chat on skype? I undid a lot of screws before I realised that one can just pop the lid off :) Oh well - one way of learning about the scale. Maybe I will be able to get a brighter display if I adjust the prisms a bit?

Will be in touch tomorrow

Regards
Ian

PS 2nd attempt at posting this reply as my PC bombed out on me. Sorry if you get it twice!

:D Yeah all the magic happens right under that lid. Not much you cannot access directly from there. Adjusting prism in the back (the right one) can supply in a slightly sharper picture, but don't mess with that for now. The front prism will slightly adjust the scale reading up and down for finetuning, thought it really should remain in a neutral position as well for now and you can adjust it from outside anyway.

If the picture isn't sharp or doesn't seem bright enough, you should try that on/off switch in the central bottom part of the front before playing with that prism in the back. A brighter reading will only be supplied by another light source or by dusting off your old one and all surfaces the ray passes. The projection should be crystal clear once everything is adjusted.

If you want to adjust it properly, you'll need to place it on a horizontal surface and keep it there. If you are only trying to measure in 1mg steps, you can carry it over to where you are using it and just do some quick rough adjustment, you'll be fine. For 100ug steps though you will have to close the windows of the scale, ensure it is properly finetuned, have a solid floor that will resist your weight when you are moving and generally just be really calm and careful not to cause any vibrations.

Regarding the messeger thing, try to write me a pm with your address and I'll add you. Also tell me what time you are planning to write me and wht timezone you are in. I'm in Germany, which makes it 6-9h later than in the USA. May I ask if the scale is going to serve any specific purpose?
