GBL + NaHCO3 -> GHB ???

At the Lycaeum they have the amounts of NaOH and KOH to react 100% with 120mL of GBL to make GHB with, which is to be expected, but then under that they list the amount of NaHCO3 (sodium bicarbonate, baking soda) needed for the same purpose. Is this really a viable method of preparing GHB? It doesn't seem like people would go to the trouble of spending all this money on NaOH if you could just use Baking Soda, so I'm curious as to what the drawbacks of this method are.
Can anyone who's tried this give a report on how well it worked, or can anyone with some chemistry knowledge explain why this is or isn't a good idea?
