We were young once, standing at the gates,
waiting for a lift home before the twilight fades to grey,
and then grey to black,
sitting on the pavement back to back,
passing ciggarrettes behind us,
was that innocence or something else?

We were young once, sitting by the lake,
waiting for the perfect moment to make an obvious mistake,
I wish I could take it back,
but then again, i'd rather not backtrack,
I wouldn't want to change us,
Is that ignorance or something else?

We were young once, living in a dream world,
oblivious to everything outside of our perfect love,
perfect love: a daydream,
if I could only have sewn a patch over the ripping seams,
of a relationship, could I have saved it?
I'd rather think about something else.

So we grew up, now it's sitting in a bar,
small talk about TV stars and pipe dreams,
what you wanted to be when you grew up, was not how it would end up,
but there are no morbid tones,
a little flirting, a few secret messages from mobile phones,
the barman points to a glass,
"two more please",
and happy hour has passed,
happy days just pass you by when time flies,
time flies and happy days just pass you by.

We were young once, sitting by the gates,
half past eight, and as always the bus was late,
so you lit up a ciggarrette, upset,
and what do you know the minute you had taken the first drag,
the bus arrived,
we got on that bus together and went our seperate ways forever.

Dedicated to the memory of the girl at the gates.
you are missed, and you will be missed until next time we meet.

It takes both an intelligent and brave person to be able to let something go, remember it and love it for what it was as opposed to hating it for what it didn't become - that alone is one of life's greatest challenges.
