game worlds- how big they are

Very cool. Ive never played just cause II or paradise, but I have played a lot of WoW and Oblivion and its amazing how huge those worlds are.

Now, the question is, does that square mileage all represent area that the player can traverse? Because in a racing game like Burnout Paradise, for instance, I assume you can only drive on the streets, which comprise probably less than half of the actual map area -- there's probably a lot of off-road land that you never even get to see. Whereas in a game like Oblivion, you can actually walk across every square inch of that map, and then there are dungeons and caves and other interior areas that aren't even included on the map. What I'm saying is, that simple comparison is probably not a very good measure of the true "size" of those game worlds.

That's a good point but, in Paradise there's very little area in which you can't drive. There's shortcuts and whole facilities off of the actual road that are well used real estate. I'm actually a bit surprised that Oblivion wasn't larger because it seemed like it to me.

A lot of Daggerfall was enclosed areas and buildings so it didn't feel quite as vast as Oblivion when you're exploring - despite actually being quite a magnitude larger.

If you want a really huge world try Arcanum for size, admittedly 95% of it is just filler land that you normally skip using fast travel since it's not fancy terrain like Oblivion etc.. but damn it's huge.

I wonder how they are going to fit a game map like the upcoming The Old Republic into this or even EVE which is another game in space.. I mean the game has what like 15 or something planets and each one is pretty big. Not to mention all the moons and random maps that are gonna pop up throughout the game and the fact that you have a ship to travel the galaxy in. Soon we'll have to start measuring in lightyears lol.

EVE 15 planets? i'm pretty sure that game has millions of planets :P

it's all about the detail though, your ability to explore. not just size.

^ Yep, otherwise games like Minecraft with pseudo-infinite worlds would come out on top.

I mean the new game The Old Republic has around 15 planets I know EVE has a bunch more.

I'd like to see the Skyrim map on there, or some of the Fallout ones. Can't seem to find any details like km x km on them..
