ok, let's try this. the person above you picks a random number. you go to your dvd collection and count in (traditionally from the top-left, left and down) that number, randomly landing on a dvd. let us know what that dvd is, what you like about it, why you have it, etc.

then pick the next number. i chose my lucky number - 23 - and this was there:

brass eye - series and special
B000FH6FOI.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V54124733_.jpg

chris morris is something of a comedy god to me. i saw him first on the day today (which also brought us alan partridge, king of the inappropriate metaphor).

i love brass eye because it is subversive, obscene and absolutely hilarious. it's one of those shows which just nails everything it seeks to satirise. the writing, camera work and acting are all pitch perfect and, in a world where 'lol' has become something of a throwaway lie, it's made me literally laugh out loud so many times.

of special interest to bluelighters - the 'drug' episode. check it out.

quotes:
"That is scientific fact. There is no real evidence for it, but it's scientific fact."
"Do you know they actually say to me that there is no such thing as heavy electricity. That electricity couldn’t possibly fall out of wires. What a load of old crap."
"Luckily, the amount of heroin I use is harmless, I inject about once a month on a purely recreational basis. Fine. But what about other people less stable, less educated, less middle-class than me? Builders or blacks for example. If you're one of those, my advice is leave well alone. Good luck."
"What is Cake? Well, it has an active ingredient which is a dangerous psychoactive compound known as dimesmeric andersonphosphate. It stimulates the part of the brain called Shatner's Bassoon. And that's the bit of the brain that deals with time perception. So, a second feels like a month. Well, it almost sounds like fun...unless you're the Prague schoolboy who walked out into the street straight in front of a tram. He thought he'd got a month to cross the street."
"An overdose of heroin is fatal - in the short term. But there has been no research whatsoever into long term effects."

Pink Floyd:The Wall
B00004CZIZ.01._SS400_SCLZZZZZZZ_V1115392671_.jpg

I bought this 1 week before the death of Syd Barrett. At the time it was $12.95(Australian). I checked the price after the death and they bumped it up to $25.95. It's one of the best music DVDs I have and I simply love everything about it.
Pink Floyd is one of my favorite psychedelic bands and the way everything is expressed in this 'movie' is perfect. I love it.

not my most interesting move in the collection, nor the one i would have chosen to show off... but really all over not a horrible heist movie
this is a movie that was acquired when collections were merged

next number: 22

i counted all my boxed sets as 1 and since my dvd's are alphabetised, i landed on
B0000682UD.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

baz luhrmann's red curtain trilogy
which consists of
strictly ballroom
romeo+juliet
and
moulin rouge

i enjoy all three of these films for different reasons.
strictly ballroom for it's directing. when this film was released i didn't pay any attention. i was like "ballroom? who gives a fuck?" but i caught it one night on tele and found it quite spellbinding, and there're some scene i found particularly inspired.
romeo + juliet clashes substance with style. although i hardly understand what they're talking about, there's plenty of dizzying direction to keep me glued
moulin rouge is just a fun fun fun spectacle.

if you haven't got 77 dvds count them all and then start from the beginning again

fucker...

capote... relative brought back a stack from thailand.

bought it for a couple of bucks at a sale simply for christopher walken and the back claims extras include "actual footage of an alien implant removal"

i have no impression from this buy

Northern Exposure-Series 1

northern.jpg

When this was originally aired I was around 9 or 10 and I used to make excuses to stay up late and watch it. I just really liked the quirky characters and storylines. I'd always go into school the next day and discuss what had happened in the previous nights eppisodes with my teacher. So now the whole series has this real nostalgic feel to it for me.

Next number: 7

7 was actually a VHS and it was Gladiator. I think we all know what that was about.

Last Night

Movie about the end of the world and takes place in Toronto.

Has Sandra Oh, Don McKellar, David Cronenberg and other Canadian actors that no one has ever heard about. Great little movie though.

Screw it, I can't wait any longer.

Someone in the room I'm in says "6."

One two three four five six....
