Gabapentin and Valerian root?

Hey everyone, I'm a chronic pain patient (Scoliosis correction surgery) and i'm out of my 180 Norco 10/325's... 2 weeks early. SO, in the wake of minor withdrawl, (I didn't take very many, maybe 30 out of the 180) I do my monthly detox with gabapentin because it helps opiate w/d. I also remembered my father telling me about Valerian root and how it's natures Valium and whatnot so I grabbed a bottle.

It isn't my first time with Valerian root, but I want to know if it's safe to combine the gabapentin with it.

medscape's interaction checker shows no interactions between these two, and my personal educated guess would also be that it's fine. However, it would be wise to hear at least a couple other opinions.

Hope you get feeling better.

From personal experience I noticed no dangerous interactions with the two, although I did notice that valerian blunted the effects of the gabapentin.

Maybe initially start with a lower dose of valerian just to be on the safe side, just in case it increases the effects/synergizes for you or something. I haven't tried valerian and gabapentin myself, but kava and gabapentin gave me some crazy effects so I'm overly cautious about combining herbal anxiolytics/sedatives with gabapentin now.

no risk at all, valerian is MAYBE a ultra-weak gaba-a agonist
personally, i have to ingest at least 10 pills of the most powerful valerian extract to feel anything and it could be placebo

Yeah I personally find valerian extremely mild too, I just figured since some people say they do get strong effects from it and/or take enormous doses, and not much is known about gabapentin, that I'd err on the side of caution and suggest starting with a lower dose of valerian to just to be on the extra safe side :)

i think valerian could be totally taken away from the calc :P
is like calling green tea a stimulant..maybe, because indeed tea contain caffeine and that's a fact while valerian contain..what it contain? Some acids that maybe are correlated to gaba and can't pass the brain barrier XD
