from asprin to codeine - a few Q's

okay, a guy I know at school. He used to be a dealer (not any more tho) and one day he was like "I'm going to let you in on a shocking secret: asprin contains small amounts of codeine". Not exactly a shocking secret, but he told me that was he used to do was just get a whole bunch of asprin and crush it up and do a water extraction, except the extraction that I read at http://www.erowid.org/pharms/codeine/codeine_faq.shtml was quite different from his. He told me that he did his in total darkness because the light would ruin it, and that you have to get the water to exact temperatures. "It's a lot like cooking crack" is the way he described it.
Anyhow, I was wondering how much (if any) codiene is in asprin, and how well would the water extraction that I linked would work on it?
 
At first I thought your dealer friend was bullshitting you, but hes partially correct.
The amount of codeine allowable by law in OTC products is 8mg per unit dose of a drug. A example is 325mg of acetaminophen (a unit dose of acetaminophen) and 8mg codeine per tablet. This law is used to prevent the excessive use of codeine as one would have to take doses reaching toxicity of acetaminophen before any real problems with the codeine administration would occur. It's the same situation with aspirin. With OTC cough medications, the highest amount of codeine allowed is 3.3mg/ml. This concentration is _so_ low that this FAQ will not be discussing cough syrups as a source of recreational codeine. The tablet form of OTC codeine products usually also includes 15mg of caffeine in each standard dose.

I belive thats Canadian law. I don't think codiene is OTC at all in the USA, and I don't think aspirin contains it...
But I don't know for sure...
 
I have been given co-codamol pain killers which are 30mg codeine to 500mg parcetamol, does the water extraction method work for these?
 
Codeine is not available OTC in the US...It is however in Canada.
I don't really know what he means when he says the extraction is like cooking crack...

Just use the simple cold water extraction, it works perfectly. Your dealer is right codine is light sensitive. But that means don't leave it in the sun for hours, you can still do the whole extraction in the light and then put the codine in the fridge when your done.
 
Plain old aspirin contains no codeine at all. If there's codeine in any sort of over-the-counter medication it will list it right on the box under active ingredients. They don't secretly put codeine in it and not tell anyone about it. That'd kind of suck for people who are allergic to codeine, they'd take a couple aspirin for a headache, and half an hour later their face swells up like the elephant man's.
