"INVESTIGATORS believe the federal agent who heroically foiled a Long Island pharmacy robbery was killed by friendly fire from a retired Nassau County police lieutenant, sources said Monday.

John Capano, 51, an off-duty agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, was picking up cancer medicine for his elderly father when he got caught up in the stickup at Charlie’s Family Pharmacy in Seaford on Saturday........"

As the retired lieutenant grabbed Capano and pulled him away from the fallen robber, a gun went off, sources said, blasting Capano. When the agent fell, his gun still in his hand, the robber reached for Capano’s weapon, sources said.

That move prompted Abria, who lives in Seaford and works out of the 101st Precinct in Far Rockaway, Queens, to fire the shot that investigators believe killed the burglar. McGoey died at the scene.

sounds like these two guys came onto the scene shooting, then made up whatever bullshit seemed convenient

Yea, the tl;dr version is basically; ATF agent shoots pharmacy robber in leg/hip to stop him from getting away, retired cop shows up and fatally shoots the ATF agent, thinking he was the robber, and then kills the actual robber when he reaches for the dead agents gun. It's pretty bad that it was a retired cop that killed them.
