Friend is suicidal

Hello,

My friend has been depressed for a while. She told me today she's been looking on the internet & read if she combines her valium & Nyquil she can die. i'm very concerned. she just picked up her refill of 90 of her 10mg valium & bought 2 bottles of Nyquil. Should I be concerned?

the APAP in the nyquil in itself will assure your friend a horrible death due to liver failure. it'll be a disaster. if you think she needs suicide watch you need to contact her guardian or family member.

she might as well not even take the valium as the nyquil will kill her by itself.

Yes, you need to be concerned and she needs to get help immediately. Does she live with family? If she does, they need to know about this. If she lives alone is there a way to arrange that she not be left alone? If need be, inform police. This is not an ideal situation, but they can get her some place safe for a few. She really needs to see a professional ASAP. The most you can do for her is spend time with her and listen, and try your best to get her to see a psychiatrist.

As for the medications she has, either one could kill her if she takes enough, as well as combining them.

I would strongly suggest telling her family and if your that scared do not be picking up things she can use to die. You don't want to live with that guilt. If she has no family. This sounds harsh but police can put a 72 hour mental hold on her in a mental ward. Ask anyone who's lost someone this way. Do everything you can no matter how angry she gets. Years ago I had to call the police on an old co worker He hated he, but it saved his life. His wife and kids call me every Christmas to thank me. If I did nothing and he blew his brain out I'd be living with that.
